Using heimdall 1.3.1 to install CF-Auto-Root-t0ltecan-sghi317m ...

The problem has to do with an heimdall 1.3.2 , downgrade back to 1.3.1 solves the problem.

bash-3.2# heimdall flash --recovery recovery.img --cache cache.img
Heimdall v1.3.1, Copyright (c) 2010-2011, Benjamin Dobell, Glass Echidna
...

Uploading RECOVERY
100%
RECOVERY upload successful
Uploading CACHE
100%
CACHE upload successful
Ending session...
Rebooting device...

It is all working now, for some reasons, SU only install when I wipe all cache and user data ...
google play will offer the upgrade and install.

Triangle away is working too....

What do I do for unlock? It is already unlocked?

Thanks!!

This was the easiest root I've ever done. I still flashed TWRP though as I prefer that over CWM. Waiting for the roms and that multi view update now.

Yeah I said it!

I've rooted 4 other phones and I'm no noob but I certainly feel like one now. I've done a lot of reading and research and I just can't get this. I've followed the directions.

After the screen below, when it reboots I should have root, right? Does anything in the pic look off to those that have been successful? It seems like SuperSU is just not taking. I've downloaded the file twice as to rule out a bad download. Everything seems to go smooth in Odin.

Edit: also tried this method http://www.android.gs/root-att-galaxy-note-2/ to no avail.

Edit2: Got it, just download SuperSU from the market; overlooked the obvious. Hope that helps someone.

@CF - donation made for your efforts with the "keep it simple root method"! this is the easiest method to root and then unroot that i've used. :) right after i rooted my device, i installed GooManager, flashed TWRP and began customizing my device. however, after a couple of days with my GN2, i've determined i'm not the targeted user for this device, so i unrooted and returned to att. this is a solid device, super fast, fluid with unlimited potential! In my case, I simply prefer the size of my S3.

my unroot, return to stock rom, stock recovery and Normal device status are listed below. AS ALWAYS I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS FUBAR's YOUR DEVICE. i'm simply posting for informational purposes only. (not sure all of the steps below are are necessary):

  1. Reboot to TWRP recovery to complete a factory reset
  2. Used CF's method to re-root and reinstall the stock recovery (e.g., method listed in 2nd Post of this thread).
  3. Purchased & installed Triangle-Away from market
  4. Used Triangle-Away to reset the counter
  5. After reboot (from step 4) uninstalled Triangle Away
  6. Via SuperSU, used the Full Unroot option to unroot. Checked GN2 Device Status and it said Modified
  7. Booted into stock recovery performed a factory reset.
  8. After device rebooted, checked Device Status again and it said Normal
  9. Returned the device to att corp store; att checked and confirmed device status (as Normal) and issued a refund.
CF, thanks again for your efforts!

Sorry if this is already answered, but are there any ramifications from rooting? Couple things I've heard are that OTA updates are no longer automatically done and some issues with the pen?

i'm no authority on this, but, it's been my experience that you have to be pure stock for OTA updates. if that's required, then CF's current method plus a few manual actions (like i listed in the post above yours) could be used to restore a pure stock configuration. when i had my Note 2, i had no issues with root and the s-pen. hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the instructions on unrooting and counter rest.
I've a quick question, after doing the factory reset i shut down and restarted using the home, power, volume down to get to download mode. I still see a yellow triangle on that screen. I take it the reset didn't work or am I missing another step in here. I didn't want to hit the volume up button at that point since it doesn't let me simply reboot after that with the do not shut target off comment.

Can Chainfire confirm if OTA updates will work with this rooting method? I'd rather hear from the expert as opposed to hearsay.

Thanks!
It won't work if the device is modified in any way. Best is to just root the device install TWRP and then when a new OTA is released just wait a couple of days for for somebody to zip up the file and flash it.

Sorry Chainfire,

I realized I dropped the ball after asking you to post the .tar of your rooted stock recovery. I wasn't available for a few days. I see you got things sussed anyway. Many Thanks for your hard work on all our behalfs.

EDIT: Just tried Triangle-Away from Play Store... works like a charm. I'm running CWM, so still display a modified flash counter, but went from 3, to 1. So I can confirm it works splendidly.
