I didn't realize that AT&T still hasn't provided the KitKat upgrade to this version of the Note 8.0. I have the WiFi only version (N5110) but I know that Rogers Canada has provided KitKat to their users of a model very similar to the AT&T version.

If and When AT&T decides to provide that update both rooting and flashing alternate firmware will be more difficult and likely to trip the KNOX flag in the 4.4.2 bootloader that voids the warranty. :(

Canadian variant "M" got the update. Us unlucky folks in the US have not gotten it (yet). I remain hopeful ... but ... ahem. AT&T. Need I say more?

Once the update is here and we AT&T users have a workable rom it shouldn't be too difficult to get it rooted and flashed ... question is "when" and "if" AT&T throws us all a bone.

We can only hope. It's a great little Tab. -smiles-

I got an unlock code a couple days ago for Note 3 as a previous customer, though I had a line for 1 day. With the Note 8.0, I called them and told them I'm not a customer but I bought a used one with clean ESN that was fully paid, so they take your email and open a case for you, after which they contact you. In both times I was lucky that they sent me the unlock code in less than a day...
I bought a Note 8 off eBay and it turns out that it is locked to AT&T. I spent over an hour on the phone with AT&T today trying to get it sim-unlocked, but they refused because it is still in the previous owner's contract and registered on that person's account. I have no way of getting in touch with the previous owner, and since I bought it from a merchant on eBay, the merchant also does not have access to any previous owner's information. Completely stuck since I wanted to use the tab abroad next week.

Does anybody have any suggestions? AT&T was being a complete ass and even though we agreed that they are the only entity with access to the previous owner's information, they refused to "get involved with third-party sales". So I am going to be stuck with an AT&T-locked tab for over a year.

Are vendors like codes2unlock.com safe? Actually, would they even be able to provide a code for this device and would it work?

I'm sorry I can't help with this, but I can assure you that a lot of people used the online SIM unlock services and they reported either success or refund. I don't know how to insure that your money, but you can ask around...

Sorry.....haven't done this in awhile.....does the tablet need to be in download mode?
TIA
I'll second this question as I started the batch file (as admin), it detects the tablet and then stops at:

Code:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
... and here it stays. Any thoughts?

Gentleman...now that we received 4.4.2 what's the suggested root method...
Towel root and saferoot don't work on this update.
Just thought I would ask for those of us with the AT&T variant.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Now that you have 4.4.2 with a KNOX bootloader, you need to be really careful about tripping the KNOX flag, especially if there is anything left on your warranty.

Use this option at your own risk but it might be worth a try. The kernel exploit that Towelroot and Saferoot used was closed with a commit in early June of this year, but it's possible to flash a Samsung signed kernel from an earlier release with Odin, perform the root, and then re-flash the signed stock 4.4.2 kernel. If done carefully it may be possible to use this method to root the stock ROM only without tripping the KNOX flag. I'm not going to outline the details since I have the GT-N5100, but I used a similar process successfully on a Galaxy S5.

If you don't care bout tripping the KNOX flag, which you will do anyway if you flash a custom recovery, kernel or ROM later, the easiest way to root is to use Odin to flash a custom recovery and then flash SuperSU from that recovery.

Thanks man, but I'm not as well versed on how to do all the kernel sourcing and such.
Also, I'm not aware of a custom recover for the ATT variant of the Note 8? I looked at CF's Auto-Root and didn't see the build...I put a message on his thread to find out...
Thanks for the reply though.

No. No root yet.
I tried to update with root but it failed every time. Had to unroot and then accept the update.
There is also no going back once you update. At least not yet.
Hope this helps.
