Anyone been able to convince nvidia to allow them to keep the old one in a functional state? We got a replacement one in mail and want to keep using the old one. We are even willing to pay for it we don't mind but every time we call, we get some idiot on the phone that can't seem to understand English and won't pass the call on. Just it's impossible to find and buy one anywhere in Canada it seems. And online the price is couple hundred more than brand new.

Dude, why don't you just use the nomoreota.zip that is on the other thread?

My sense is they are asking permission to keep it instead of sending it back ... In the locations where Nvidia is collecting returns it is presumably unethical not to send it in as each returned unit generates $ for Nvidia. If Nvidia were to give them permission to keep it that ethical dilema of keeping it goes away.

It's unlikely Nvidia would acquiesce to the request but if you talk to enough customer service drones who know what answer you may get.

Exactly. It's just trying to be proper is all. Want to try do things truthfully. I know about the removeota thing but it would be nicer to not have to go through that bothersome. So far no luck with customer service though.

on stock, rooted and unlocked, 3.1.1, flashed the kill switch and the update firmware option in the setting is gone already, thinking of resetting the tablet. can i just restore factory setting, no problem right? i mean not stuck in the android logo.

You can, but it won't restore any system apps you've deleted (TegraOTA.apk for one).

Is it possible to do something once it has been disabled? It won't even turn on for anything

Your new mobo is bricked too then or not installed properly. It's been explained on here already what it does. It doesn't destroy anything, it is forced to flash a blank bootloader bricking the tablet.

I was wondering the same. I have 3 other working shield tablets and if there was a way to kick start the deactivated one using a working one, that would be amazing.

I guess it wipes the bootloader clean or something like that. I'm not sure how it disables the damn power button tho. I get zero response with the power button.

Something really strange is going on with my Shield Tablet. I got the replacement and used the OTA disabler on the old one, and it's been smooth sailing until today. I checked it tonight and it won't turn on. The charging light comes on when I plug it in, and a battery picture appears on the screen, but the power button doesn't do anything. Was there a time-based killswitch we didn't know about or something? I'm confident I killed the killswitch properly.

Same thing happened to me. Will not turn on. Charger lights up as normal. I even took the back off and tested the battery. It tests perfect. I don't know how to get it working again.

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to soft reset it. Then press it again to switch on as normal.

Holding the power down for 30 seconds makes no difference. The Sleep of Death. Never even heard that before. My tablet didn't actually go to sleep when this happened. It was in the middle of updating some stuff from the Play Store then suddenly turned off, rebooted, flashed the TWRP screen for a second and back off.

I DO think its related to the Kill Switch. The reason I was updating apps from the Play Store is I had just reflashed my TWRP backup. Its a backup created right after a clean 5.1.1.

My method has always been to flash that then before booting into Android the first time, I delete several things through TWRPs file manager; live wallpapers, basically any app that I can get from the Play Store, etc. And, one of those things i delete is that OTA. I just simply f**cked up this time.

Ok I was referring specifically to Nawoa's post before yours. If the battery icon appears then it is not the kill switch. He can use the 30 second power hold or he can flash back with the stock recovery image. In your case you have probably triggered the kill switch.

Just a final follow-up question. Those of us that recieved the REAL Kill Switch (tablet turned off and is not powering back on at all even tho the charger lights up and battery tests fine etc.) There is no method of resurrection, correct?

This tablet is for parts only?
