Should I get the OnePlus 7T T-Mobile or 7 Pro for best root experience / custom ROMs?

Hello all,

I'm on T-Mobile and trying to get away from the hell that is Samsung. I'm looking at OnePlus 7T T-Mobile, or 7 Pro.
It looks like the "root community" is more active on 7 Pro, and my fear is that the "7T T-Mobile" will give me trouble when unlocking bootloader and installing custom ROMs.
7 Pro seems to be very close in specs and has just looking at the ROMs section here makes it look like it has a more active community.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

There's probably more development in the 7Pro forums but, aside from a few minor (personal) tweaks, there's not much reason to flash custom ROM's (in my opinion). That being said, I myself am anxious to see Paranoid Android's ROM once it's ready for flashing!

I've been on OnePlus since the OP3T and while I used to root and flash (almost) weekly, but the need/desire has waned over the past few years and that's because OxygenOS is really, really good.

The T-Mobile OP7T is easy to unlock and root as long as you follow the directions. The "worst part" is waiting for your unlock-code.bin file from OnePlus. See here for the conversion process: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7t/how-to/guide-t-mobile-brand-conversion-to-t4019495

Hope this helps. And welcome back from Samsung hell!

This is also a great tool to have in your back pocket. His work on the OnePlus phones has saved my bacon more times than I can remember! https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7t/how-to/tool-tool-one-driversunlocktwrpfactory-t4103515

Having both 7pro and 7t, most ROMs lack the optimization that oxygen OS provides. As the previous guy mentions Paranoid Android is one of the most fluid ROMs available but it still has bugs or lacking some useful features from other ROMs. I just relocked my bootloader on my 7t and my 7pro is currently on havoc is 3.7. its relatively easy to unlock the bootloaders on both devices and the msmtool makes it a breeze to get back to stock. Feel free to ask anything regarding both devices. The reason the 7t doesn't have many ROMs is because of Android 10's partition layout. That makes it hard for twrp to function on the 7t. As for the pro well there's options for ROMs and kernels since it didn't launch with Android 10.

Pros for the 7pro
-full display
-non circular camera hump
-feels slimmer
Cons
-if used with no case the curved screen will get accidental inputs from the palm
-pop up camera is slow and certain apps activate it(mostly Snapchat) when in chats, camera would stay up.
-battery drain on custom ROMs drain faster than stock in some instances

This is just me nitpicking on some gripes
