I had the same problem, but i found out besides switching off the battery optimisation you also need to activate "home action compatibility" under "advanced" in the F.N. settings. Now it works perfectly.

Hi. Could you maybe give me a screenshot from the "home action compatibility" and where exactly to find these settings? I can´t find the described setting

It just won't let me download it...

You might need to download the pixel Bridge first if you are trying to download from the app store. Or you find the apk for it. Could also search for ruthless pixel launcher on xda
