I liked the video of the screen-off CRT look the "Gingerbread leak" had so I whipped up a shutdown animation to look like it. It's not that polished but it does the job.

Here's a gif preview. On the phone it's twice as fast and to scale. I didn't feel like messing around with the gif to get it to speed up.

Confirmed working on the Desire Z and SkyRaider Sense. Will most likely work on other ROMs.

Instructions
-If not on Desire Z or Skyraider, check your /system/customize/resource to see which file you need.
-Download corresponding .zip(s)
-ADB push to /system/customize/resource
-Power down to test :)

Desire Z (push both)
downanimation.zip
shutdown.zip

Skyraider
shutdown.zip

Using Dropbox so you should be able to d/l straight from phone. No waiting.

(If you are a dev and would like to include this in your ROM, please ad me to your credits and send me a PM to let me know. Thanks)

EDIT:Checked MIUI but didn't find an existing shutdown animation so you're on your own for now.
No bad, not bad at all. Just installed on Skyraider, thanks :D

Any luck getting this to work with Warm 2.2? Doesn't appear to be a shutdown/downanimation in the folder, however there is a shutdown.inc.rc in the root section.

doesnt seem to work for me on skyraider 3.3, i tried via roto explorer, rebotoed and nothing, tried with adbs and still nothing, all i see is the standard android spining circle thingy and then the sceren just shuts off...

i checked file permissions and theyre the same as the original shotdown.zip....

update: it works when i go to reboot the phone, and doesnt when i just power it off. i guess its by design...

Yeah, I'm not positive but I think that's the way it's was with the original shut down animation.

Glad the few who got it working like it :)

No clue on the Nexus One. The phones have the same resolution so if it's possible, the images are sized correctly.

Tried in Virtuous. I found a shutdown file in /system/bin, deleted it and put in the shutdown.zip (renamed to just "shutdown").....didn't work. Basically got a 'shutdown loop' where it said it was shutting down, vibrated like it normally does before it shuts down, but never shut down.
Anyone else with tips on doing this with Virtuous?

any idea what to push for Redemption Rom? Neither of those files are found in /system/customize/resource/ only zip found is VZW_bootanimation.zip

Does this work when just turning the screen off? Or is it just when you shutdown the phone?

What should I push?

I can confirm that with the Desire running the RCMixHD rom I push the files to /data/local and this works fine.

Thanks for this! I thought about this idea a long time ago but no tome to put into making it, glad its been thought of for 2.3 and already have a working one here!

does anyone know if it's possible to get this running on MIUI? I definitely love this animation! and would love to use it. But am not really too sure about the whole pushing to device quite yet to try. If it works, I'll jump through the hoops required to learn pushing. thanks in advance :)
