I am in a similar boat - I bought the phone from Ebay and it was T Mobile (brand new sealed). No service was able to unlock it for me so I called T Mobile and opened an Pre-Paid account. I put $10 on and used this while in the States to show it registered on T Mobile system.

I called to ask if it was registered on their network and they said yes. When I contacted T Mobile today, they said they can unlock it today if I put alteast $100 in refills. So once I did that, and called back - they then told me they still could not unlock it as my IMEI number was not registered in their system and my phone was not showing as a T Mobile phone!

I escalated the issue to the Support team and hopefully hear a response in the next two days. I told them that I did all they asked me to do including calling several times to verify the phone was with T Mobile so they either unlock my phone or refund me the $100 I paid.

Hey man, I am doing exactly this, I asked a friend to get the sim card and bring it, but ETA is next monday (Jan 11th), so I called the t-mobile to make sure it would work. So they said, activate the sim card on the prepaid plan, leave it in the phone for at least 72 hrs and then pay the $100 to the plan, after the 72 hrs call them back and ask for the permanent unlock, they confirmed that the unlock would be right away. So now that you are saying this I reaally want to keep in touch with you, so I can understand how it went. I have until Jan 14th to return the phone to eBay. So if it does not work for you, so, it probably will not work for me. Hope you will get answer soon m8.

Okay so I got an email from Support saying that I need to use the Device Unlock App.. So I called back Technical Support and finally someone told me that even if I am eligible, I need to be connected to a T Mobile network in order for the unlock to go through!

So basically I need to go to the states, connect to the network, then it will unlock. This is the only rep that told me this despite me telling all of them that I live in Canada *sighs* luckily I live about 1.5 hrs away from the border so I guess I know what I will be doing this weekend.

What a work, isn't it? But I can't wait to hear back from you after the weekend tho. My sim card is underway and arriving on Monday so, I'll be doing exactly the same if it works for you. Now weird is that the tech department when i asked all the conditions they did not mention that must be under their network. It is really new info. Finger crossed!

Hey, I didn't get a chance to cross the board as I had some stuff come up but I'm kind of skeptical about that whole idea. The reason being is that I am on prepaid and I don't have data so even if I crossed the border, I would still have to connect to WiFi in order to get the app to work so what is the difference between using WiFi in the US vs Canada.

As well, I've read multiple accounts from other users who were able to unlock the phone while being outside of the US so something does not add up to me.

I called back and spoke to a Technical Support Supervisor who escalated my issue and she said she would call me back within three business days with a resolution. If I cannot get it unlocked after that, I'm just cutting my losses and selling the phone. I can't deal with this stress anymore.

Totally agree with you, I'm gonna put the sim card tomorrow, I'll call tmobile to see if I need any other setup and I'll let you know.. But basically I will have to wait 72hs as mentioned before, by Thursday I'll call tmobile and ask them to unlock, if it works, fine, otherwise I'll return the phone.

Hey, were you able to unlock the sim? I am also in the same boat and T-Mobile is suggesting me to get a 100$ account initially

Hmm, I started a PayPal dispute with the seller and he declined mentioning PayPal will not consider buyer's remorse. Also since it was never used on a T-Mobile account, it isn't register in their databases. I am planning of taking a 100$ prepaid account, use it for 3 days, apply for unlock and then escalate the claim to PayPal as hardware issue. Will that work? Did anyone try this way with PayPal?

This is in reply to the above quite, not to the OPs post (who probably got a completely unregistered demo model).

I unlocked my Prepaid T-Mobile V10 from outside the states. The chat operator said that for temporary unlocks you need to be on cellular internet, but not for permanent unlocks. The later are possible via Wifi (even from Europe, as I did). I had a prepaid plan on my phone and needed to do this (for my prepaid V10 which was paid upfront in a T-Mo shop in NY):

  • payments of at least $100 to my prepaid account
  • waiting 14 days (buyers remorse)

Only thing left to do: I need to sell my T-Mo SIM card with the $100 on it...

Let me tell you my own experience with unlocking T-mobile, which may add some confusion in requirements really needed.
I live in France. I bought my T-mobile v10 on eBay. That was a risky deal cause the phone was NOT paid already (monthly payments), and was sold without T-mobile sim card. The seller said he just used the phone about 6 hours. Received it temporary unlocked.
The temporary unlock ended around 25th December. I was not able to permanently unlock, but temporary unlock worked fine.
This new temporary unlock ended, ans I was able to renew it. Permanently unlock still didn't work.
This one ended today. I used cellunlocker.net to have permanently unlock (some other services like unlockbase are not available from France). First surprise, they told me my phone is ready to unlock. Second, the permanently unlock WORKS!
All unlocks made with WiFi connection, my French orange sim card in the phone.

Has anyone unlock a rooted phone that has been returned to stock? I bought a V10 from a guy who bought the V10 from the retail store. The IMEI checked out in the tmobile IMEI database. The seller told me he requested the unlock from TMobile and got an unlock instruction email from tmobile. What he didn't tell me was that he had unlocked the bootloader, rooted the phone and installed TWRP and god knows that ROM. I flashed back to stock and installed stock recovery and relocked the bootloader. I tried the unlock app and it failed to unlock. it shows not eligible for unlock. Has anyone permanently unlocked a previously rooted V10? I tried with and without my AT&T SIM card, both on WiFi. Both failed.

You have to have a tmobile Sim In the phone for the unlock app to work...

As I explained in post #30, having a t-mobile sim card isn't needed to use the unlocking app. Well, at least when using internet services, if it may have any impact.

Just ordered the unlock from swiftunlocks for 27.99 it's the cheapest I can find. I hope this will unlock it since the phone is a T-Mobile retail version not an LG partner purchase. I have an expired T-Mobile prepaid SIM. Not sure if that will work.

    Here's two options :

    1. Ask your friend that have tmo service to call tmo and register your phone IMEI with their number and call tmo to unlocked it using device unlock app... since your phone not blacklisted or No financed.....[Worked for me].

    2. Unlocked the BL... Install twrp... Root it and flash custom Rom ....install SuperSU and install regionlockaway.apk by @Chainfire same the creator of SuperSU and maybe it would unlock the SIM card. It worked for me in the past.... With Samsung ...htc phone....not sure LG phone.

Got mine unlocked using markbencze's method but without having to activate a prepaid card + using it for 40 days.

Bought my H901 V10 Locked to Tmobile off ebay from a user who couldn't get it unlocked in my country (Canada).
Did my research, checked the IMEI on the tmobile site and it didn't come up with anything.

So I got the phone, tried the tmobile "device unlock" app with no luck. Tried unlockbase.com and they refunded me pretty much within 24 hours saying they couldn't unlock it.
Called tmobile customer support. Very unhelpful, telling me to contact the buyer to unlock it for me or return the phone.

Was prepared to buy a sim card when I decided to try emailing the tmobile specialist email that markbencze listed. I told them my IMEI and that I bought it off a ebay seller and it was possibly a LG partner V10.
They got back to me quickly and asked for a screenshot or picture of the IMEI and proof of purchase (I sent my ebay invoice).

They added the IMEI to their database and I got it unlocked with their app within seconds. This only took a couple of hours which is much better than having to buy a prepaid card and using it for 40 days.
I suggest anyone who has bought the phone off a third party vendor to try emailing or calling the contact in markbencze's post first before you follow tmobile's annoying unlocking policies.

Guys see my reply here. This may be of some use.
More details to come. If by chance my post there gets edited and the tmo contact information disappears just pm me or find me on hangouts or Google plus

What is an LG Partner V10?

Sent from my VK815 using XDA-Developers mobile app

From what I heard in different threads, It's LG devices that people got using the lg partner promotion. Probably only offered to people in the industry or for testing.

And these devices are initially locked to tmobile but never activated on the network so the imei doesn't show anything when you use the verify site on tmobile. But if you call someone higher up, they will add the imei to their database making it possible for unlock.

    Tmo corporate

I had this same unlocking issue with my G4. G4 was locked to Tmo, but since I got my G4 directly from LG, preloaded with Tmo software, my IMEI was not in Tmo's system. Here is how I got my G4 unlocked:
    1. Filed formal complaint with the FCC, and the Washington State attorney generals office.
    2. Waited for Tmo corporate office to contact me
    3. Used Tmo paid shipping to send phone to Tmo employed LG tech in Bellevue, WA for unlocking
    4. Tmo shipped phone back.

Took about 2 weeks. By law, they have to unlock the phone if you do not owe a balance on it.
    Tips:
-As you know, Customer service is worthless and will in one way or another insist that your phone is a fake when the Tmo rep chooses not to add your IMEI to their system. They will insist that you need to talk to LG
-LG barely speaks English in my experience. They do this to get you off the phone. LG will insist that you need to contact T-Mobile to get it unlocked.
-If your lucky, your T-mobile rep will call LG while placing you on hold. It is at this point that the rep runs out of options as he/she realizes that T-mobile needs to unlock it but Corp has refused to give everyday employees access to unlock.
-Create a large enough fuss with corporate and the FCC, you'll get your phone unlocked.
