The instruction is quite detailed and it means you are doing something wrong. What version of ODIN? You need version 3.13 or higher. I don’t flash the vbmeta file separately, I pack and flash it together with the patched kernel ... On the T295XXU3BTFE firmware, you will not flash either vbmeta or the patched kernel due to the T295XXU3BTFE bootloader, since the protection is reinforced :(
Therefore, on 10 android, you first need to flash a part of BL from firmware 9 of android.
P.S. I guess the bootloader is already unlocked? this is the first thing to do before rooting.
Is this file for rooting being flashed?

Friend thanks for responding ... Yes, the boot loader is unlocked. I have the tablet updated on version 10 (ZTO-T295XXU3BTFE) of android, and using version Odin 3.14.1 to update and install root. What is not clear to me are the files you provided with Root_T295XXU3BTFE_M20.4.tar. Do I need to install Root_T295XXU3BTFE_M20.4.tar (in place of the AP) along with version BL_T295XXS3ATB2_CL17034026_QB29519559_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5, and the CP and HOME_CS files only?
After that, I enter recovery and do data cleaning?

Everything is easier than it seems! (c) If the bootloader is unlocked, then you need to select the Root_T295XXU3BTFE_M20.4.tar file in ODIN as part of the AP and the BL_T295XXS3ATB2 file as part of the BL and flash it. After downloading, update MagiskManager or install It if it is not available in the Apps. All, Root rights are obtained, but the data is saved. Simply use. :)

Just flash Root_T295XXU3BTFE_M20.4.tar.

Thank you very much ... everything went perfectly ....
Could you please make a root version for the T290 model (ZTO-T290XXU2ATB1)?
I didn't find anything for this firmware version ...

Hi may I please ask, will this root work as well on a UK version of the T290 or T295?
Also, if the tablet were to come with android 10 could I move it back to 9 to be able to do this root?

Basically I want to buy this tablet for my little boy who has autism but I desperately need root and twrp as he has a habit of crashing tablets and breaking them too, so I need to be able to do a full exact-copy backup of the entire tablet so I can restore it fast (and maybe even to a spare tablet) but I need to be sure things will be stable and possible before I spend the money and before I give it to him.

Thank you so much for any help thank you.

1) The method itself will work but you will need the corresponding patched file to achieve root for your specific firmware.

2) As long as bootloader version is same, you can switch between firmwares regardless of the version. Currently, on most regional variants, the bootloader version between latest Android 10 and the last Android 9 is same i.e. v3. Infact, its only due to this that we are able to achieve root on Android 10 firmware ( its a hack of sorts)

3) Although we have root, sadly we do not have any working TWRP. Its a work in progress and the test version cannot do a nadroid backup/restore. The only way to restore a bricked device is Odin flash.

Considering your requirements, i would say that this tablet isn't suitable for you at the moment.

Thank you very much I appreciate that. Any thoughts on a similar tablet that would fit, eg root and twrp? Thank you again

EDIT: Would I be able to get a similar level of backup using titanium backup rather than twrp I wonder??

Many Samsung Tabs have official TWRP support and you can pick one based on your budget and regional availability. Visit the TWRP website to check out supported devices.

TiBu does backup app+data but it is nowhere near to the entire nandroid backup made by TWRP. And in my experience, restoring titanium backup gives errors when you shift between versions.

EDIT: Looking on twrp the latest they have looks to be the 2018 version of the Tab A which is already a 2 year old tablet, which seems wasteful to buy. How long usually is it until a working twrp is established on a device? I see there is a separate thread working on it.

EDIT 2: How easy is a restore via Odin? Maybe I could root and use Odin to backup/restore instead of twrp??

I believe there may be a way of pulling whole partitions via ADB. Not sure if that could be used for device backup/restore. You may have to be in TWRP for that to work - to unmount the data partition, for example. Just a thought. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could clarify.

No ETA for TWRP, depends on the device and the dev working on it. Samsung partitions are a bit weird so it might take time or we may never have a fully functional official TWRP. Since latest kernel sources are still missing, your guess is as good as mine !

Odin is like fastboot for Samsung; it doesnt require root but it cannot backup. Basically, its a flashing tool to flash firmware including modified/patched firmware.

In my limited experience, adb backup -all is extremely finicky, corrupts backup on Windows (maybe better on Linux) and the restore process is cumbersome.

Again thank you so much. Am I right then in thinking that there isnt really an existing way of backing up this particular tablet?? Thanks

Make a backup of the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile to a memory card, this is the best option ... Well, something can be saved (data only) with the Hellium program, it can be restored after SSSM ...
When Hellium is launched for the first time on the device, a link is given to download the file for the computer, download, launch, enable USB debugging on the device and connect it to the computer, on the device we give the go-ahead on request ...
Hellium makes a backup to the built-in memory, so copy it to a memory card, and then back to restore ...
