Question Smart Lock fingerprint unlock 'feature'

I have Smart Lock enabled using my Bluetooth watch.

By design, I think Smart Lock times out after 4(?) hrs, right?

At that point it seems I have to use PIN unlock, and the phone will not offer fingerprint unlock. Is that right/a bug/a "feature". Annoying, anyway.

I thought it was random but I believe you are correct and it will force you to use a PIN and not the FP scanner. I have this as well but didn't think much of it until you made the connection here.

I thought this was silly too, but then I read that fingerprints are actually considered less secure than pins:
