So I'm getting a T-Mobile One S...two quick questions (video playback and tethering)

I just recently bought a Galaxy Nexus, and love it apart from the size (just barely too big to comfortably use one-handed for me - especially without a good case) and the camera quality (in certain regards, my old HTC G2's camera seems better)...and soon I'll be getting a One S for free (that black T-Mobile-employee-only one), and I'm heavily considering switching to it as my primary phone, but I have two concerns:

-Can it handle on-device 720p MKV's? I have no idea about bitrate/codecs/etc, all I know is that my Galaxy Nexus plays it fine (in software mode in MX Video Player) with audio and video in sync.
-Does rooting bypass the T-Mobile tethering plan requirement (and is it permanently or basically until they catch on anyway)? I really don't want to spend that extra $15/month if I don't have to, and my Galaxy Nexus hasn't given me any issues regarding tethering.

I'm hoping the one I'd get wouldn't have any issues, so I may end up keeping the Galaxy Nexus in case I need to send it back for whatever reason, but other than that, is there anything I need to know about the One S that I may not know?
