Star is usually when you have "do not disturb" activated maybe also priority too.

Has anyone gotten App Settings to work to put Chrome into the Tablet UI, without it being too tiny to see? Previous devices I just dropped DPI to 213 or 240 and no problem - here that doesn't seem to do the trick.

Change the resolution to 1000x1600. I have dpi at 440

Yes which is basically what I said.

With that Xposed and Quick Circle together should also work on LG G2.

It's the silent mode indicator. You must have settings =>sound => interruptions activated. Check it out.

As a workaround for now, you can use LTE Discovery to display the current data connection type in the statusbar. It's not ideal, but it works.
