TL;DR is that he's opening the Kindle Fire and shorting out one of the pins on the circuitboard. Risky to be sure but what I am curious about is if this is doing the same thing as as a factory cable would? Thoughts?

Right, its the easiest and cheapest option. Just a female standard A (the flat one) to a micro male. Just plug it into any standard USB cable

Yeah, thats what is sounds like he is doing. All a factory cable does is supply 5V to the 5th normally unused pin and he is just doing that by shorting to that pin on the board.
