I think you are right. Did some digging on the net, and found out its because the phone's bootloader has been unlocked. Is there a way it can be relocked and return to stock firmware or something?

You have a unique device with the bootloader unlocked. Search and find current software/firmware for your particular brand and sideload it to the device. It should update fine. Try firmware finder. downloadable form this thread.
