[SOLVED] Moto E3 XT1700 (NOT E3 Power) - Unable to boot TWRP

I have a new Moto E3 XT1700 (the plain E3, NOT the E3 POWER) which I have been trying to install TWRP on without much luck. I have read all the threads in this forum on TWRP and Rooting, but most seem to be specific for the E3 power. I am defintely using the Moto E3 2016 TWRP image (taido), which I found in the official thread posted by @HostZero, but it doesn't seem to boot. This is the procedure I am trying:

1) Boot the stock OS, enable developer option in settings->about phone->tap build number 7 times
2) Enable OEM unlock and USB debugging in developer options.
3) Connect PC via USB, accept USB ADB request
4) issue command on PC: adb reboot bootloader
5) phone boots to black screen with "FASTBOOT Mode" text.
6) issue command : fastboot oem unlock.
7) Phone prompts to press vol up to unlock bootloader or vol down to cancel -> press vol up
8) Phone reboots to FASTBOOT Mode, now also says "Device unlocked"
9) issue command : fastboot format userdata -> phone says OK
10) issue command : fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-taido.img - > phone says OK

From this point I have tried the followintg steps to get the phone to boot into TWRP, none of which work:
a) power off phone, use power+vol up to get to boot menu, select recovery mode -> phone reboots into stock OS
b) take out battery, reinsert it, then use power+vol up to get to boot menu, select recovery mode -> phone reboots into stock OS
c) issue command : fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-taido.img -> phone waits about 25 seconds then reboots into stock OS

Everytime the phone reboots after trying this, it takes about 5 minutes to boot (I assume because it has to reformat userdata partition), and is in a "factory default" state (i.e. have to go thru initial setup, re-enable developer options, etc). The phone still says "device unlocked" in small text at the bottom of the screen when it first powers on or reboots.

I am able to boot into the stock recovery using "adb reboot recovery" and using the power+vol up combination after the phone has booted into the stock OS once, but not before. (Boots to the broken android/no command screen, but I can get to the recovery menu by pressing power+vol up a few times).

Does anyone have any suggestions on why this isn't working, or can see anything I'm doing wrong?
Has anyone out there successfully installed TWRP on an XT1700?
Does anyone know a way to root the phone using the stock recovery?

My System version is 23.0.XT1700_S124_160826_ROW if that matters.

Quick update: After asking in the Official TWRP threat for the Moto E3 2016, one user said that the official TWRP images are for the E3 Power, not the the E3 2016.

So that's super confusing, no thanks to Motorolla for making the device names so similar, but it would be good if people could stop talking about the E3 Power as if it is the same as the E3 2016.

I have the same device (XT1700) with the same system version as you.
Successfully rooted, flashed twrp and now running xposed.
The operation has failed for you where you enter "fast boot flash recovery taido.img"
In my case, i renamed the recovery IMG to "recovery" and flashed with no issues.
My input in cmd was "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
The information you received about the E3 power twrp not working on a normal E3 is crap!
I have flashed the E3 power Twrp on my E3 (after renaming it recovery.img) and it works great with no issues.
You really need to follow the correct procedures and not blindly follow someone elses advice, this is why it did not work for you.
what you posted was very long winded and the operation I undertook to do this to my E3 took less than 10 mins.

Look at my next post, it proves I have an XT1700 E3 and not an XT1706 E3 power!!!!

Thanks for the tip, I was able to install TWRP using the unofficial 3.0.2.2 image created by @dr.faramroze. I was using the official 3.0.2.0 version compiled by @HostZero before.

There is a TWRP back up from the E3 power XT1706 available here on XDA, it's in the stock rom thread.
It's working great because I'm using it.

After I asked my question I saw that there's no problem to restore a stock XT1706 on a XT1700

Please i connect my moto xt1700 to pc and it show MT65xx Preloader in device manager. Is there a firmware to flash? Please help.....
