But Sony is releasing 4-5 flagship devices. From the looks of it, 3 are coming out with the Qualcomm 600 cpu, and likely another with the Qualcomm 800 at the end of the year. Good for them but I suspect it will leave those of us with Xperia Z and ZL's waiting longer for updates.

4-5 flagships? A flagship is determined by the company not the spec. The Z is their H1 flag ship, they may release a H2 flag ship as well, all other devices are supplimentary. The S was the H1 flagship for 2012 but no1 considered the Acro S to be a replacement flag ship although it brought water proofing with similar specs to the S.

To break it down. what Domoco is getting is irrelevant to the rest of the world for example they got the SX but that was never made available outside of Japan to the best of my knowledge and we had to wait more than 3 months to get the GX which becames the TX for international users.

Let us say they Bring out a s800 H2 flag ship, that may be accompanied by a region based sister phone (a la T/TX,Z/ZL). Then the mid range may be covered by a couple s600 phones and possibly a low end s4 phone.

Sony releases phones in batches so I do not see the problem.
eg S/P/U, T/V/J/E, Z/ZL/SP/L so it is safe to assume the H2 batch exists and also their "prototype" devices they make cheap to test features like floating touch/our new led notification lights.

I say 3 flagships a year - one at the beginning of year,
A phablet and another flagship mid year around July/August, so there is always 6/7 months between flagships.

2 mid ends
2 low ends
I'll be fair and say maybe 2 entry level aswell but if they want to get to the top keep it simple.

So 9 total
Don't even touch double digits.

Samsung's touchwiz is packed to the hilt with loads of software additions but yet, Samsung get it out quicker, up to date, and more stable than Sony can dream of right now.
Maybe Samsung Updates have loads of software, they get them out quicker, up to date, BUT they are everything but stable, i have been suffering them for two years, and now it is over. i prefer one stable Sony's firmware over ten Samsung's over-bloated beta firmwares.

Cheers.

Furthermore samsung upgrade only few certain devices rather than the whole portfolio.

If i want poorly supported, try the original tab 7 & 10, tab 7.7, and the sleep of phone without the "S" moniker. Heck even the original galaxy S

This year Sony has upgraded many devices, and very stable as well, my girlfriend has the xgo and it received Jb 2 weeks ago. And it's a low end forgotten device.
And they're gonna upgrade all 2012 phones, except for tipo, the 70£ phone.

I only use Sony ' s phone for my entire life. Releasing number of phones in each year isn't a news for Sony since quite some time ago. And I would have to agree that high end spec phone doesn't necessarily mean that it's the flagship , the flagship is usually determined by Sony.

Historically, Japanese carriers have refreshed their phone lineups every season. This could just be Sony's attempt to stick with that trend.

TBH while I hate the concept of having a phone which is out dated by new models, I do believe that the Xperia Z is such a well put together device this isn't the end for it. You look at the like of other manufacturers, Samsung, HTC etc there all pushing updated software with more features, and more power.

Two things stand out to me;

1) The Xperia Z has the premium materials you'd expect of the iPhone giving you a handset which is purposeful and useful

2) Software should be more about real world usefulness, in example the smart rotation of the Samsung phones took approximately 3 seconds to analyse whether you had rotated the handset. Making it a nightmare to use in real life.

Now if we take those two points into consideration we realise that a cheaply made Samsung with features which aren't practical is actually not as good as the Xperia Z.

If Sony do decide to release more phones this year, this can only be a good thing as they will be able to accommodate the different levels in the market. Not everyone can afford a flagship phone, some people might prefer a smaller screen like the iPhone. If the Xperia Z design language is pushed into a 3.8-4" screen perhaps some of the iPhone users will move over to android, since they are more interested in the phone construction than gimmick software like Samsung.

This month I'm planning on buying the Z tablet as its the first tablet I've liked the look and feel of, the phone is great and the tablet is a larger version so it's win win. The whole reason Apple have been so successful is because they know that the hardware design and aesthetics is more important than the software to a certain extent.

The day's of plastic bodied android phones is coming to an end as people want a product which feels expensive in the hand, and since android is pretty similar on all devices the quality of the handsets is more important

So they are just gonna churn out phones after phones..Xperia Z will be forgotten even before the end of the year this way..And apart from that..why so many phones? And with same capabilities of XZ? Whats wrong with sony..Htc just learnt its lesson!
I think Samsung practices this? Didn't Samsung release a new phone today and a few last month? My ion isn't forgotten. It's getting JB this month and the current ICS builds have no bugs, that I can encounter.
And just for your information, I have no idea why you guys have the illusion HTC One is launched in 4.2? It is still on JB 4.1! Stop those nonsense post that Sony's going to lose badly as they have outdated android version. This is totally false. Majority of consumers don't give a damn about android version, fortunately. Only the few people bitching about android version upgrade ends up here in XDA, sadly.

History will repeat itself again if Sony released more than 10 models this year.

Xperia Z will be this year's Xperia S. Next year Xperia Z's users will cry for sony putting Android 5.0 update to Xperia Z last, like what they did to Xperia S.

Last year they released 15 international models, if you include variants for each models, that will be around 20 phones.

So far, Sony has released 5 models in 5 months. They need to slow down and focus on good all-in-one package instead of experimental models like Sola, Xperia P, etc...

Anyway, Sony is doing well this year so far, their future is on their own hands now.

Seriously? Sony's firmware is not always stable, especially the first firmware for a phone or new Android version, almost like a beta.

Other than the Xperia Z, which other Sony phones are made of materials other than plastics??

People sounds like only Samsung uses Plastics for their phones...

I prefer good plastic finish over shiny aluminium any day. Aluminium is overrated.

Recent Sony's plastic back cover is quite fingerprint and scratch resistant, which is a good thing because I don't like to put on cases to my phones.

Sony Xperia Z + no news of this, or you guys know something that any of us know?

Sony have not mentioned they are going to release a plus model of any Sony phone, nor are there any claims.

Although now they have got to Z, they might have to go back to a ;)

Xperia P was aluminum finish :)
