"Should" is the right word here. 4.2 has been out for a long time, so it is very strange to release anything but 4.2 now in 2013.

Also some media (or Sony themselves) have said there's very little theming/customisation on the phone, so updates should be fast.
Again I still don't see how "fast" updates can come when it's not even released with the latest software.
But when I get the device cm will be applied withing minutes of owning the phone, so as long as they (cm) release something that works, the phone will run the latest android:p

Sony already stated 4.2 will be available "shortly after launch"

(source: sony official blog. I posted the link a couple of days ago)
gtrab,
You have been around long and you know there have been times Sony said something then changed it. I hope they start acting instead of talking. Sony has surely been improved since X10 era.

Let's give sony a chance this time buddy. Even I did since they have a change in leadership(CEO) just now so things may change. :fingers-crossed:

Makes more sense to launch a phone on what you developed it on, than to just launch on a Rushed 4.2, 4.2 stock has bugs lol

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That's true but still, they have to optimize things with their own UI. Im pretty sure the M7 and the Galaxy S IV will launch with 4.2.

Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 2

Yes, no worries, I understood that. I also tried to say: I too think they should release it with 4.2:)

Also looking at their pre production phone, their software looks pretty bad, so I don't think it would matter with "buggy" 4.2 or the base they've been developing it on. Atm their base looks bad, so either they fix it in two months, or they rebase it om 4.2

The thing is that: this is their flagship phone, 4.2 has been out for a while, 2 months is still a long time, they have a lot of Sony devs, so I still don't see how releasing a flagship in 2013 with dated android is a wise choice.

This seems to be their standard though: dated android. They did this with the x10 or whatever it was called, and i won't be surprised if they do it again now. But hopefully the new management is improved and we'll se updates in timely matter. Also if they keep the community support up, it won't matter since it will have dev support:)

XDA named Sony "2012 OEM of the year" for a reason, and that means a lot to me.
They are changing, listening, officialy unlocking bootloaders, sticking to their update pathway, helping the devs community a lot, etc.

I believe the release of 4.1.2 is a marketing strategy.

Releasing 4.1.2 as initial firmware core and updating it to 4.2 then the next generation of android would make it look like they'll be providing subsequent updates. While if they release 4.2 as an initial firmware and update it to next android soon that would only look like they provided a single update which would invoke another rant from users like

"Sony promised 18months of support yet they only released 1 OS update!!!"

"Sony only released 1 update on their flagship phone they just release a device and loses interest on it after sales."

So yeah... if they make the initial OS 4.1.2 then that would make it 2 major updates while if they release 4.2 as initial OS that would only make 1 major update.

Like the logic says... Any number greater than 1 = many.

what do you guys think about it...shouldnt sony release the phone with 4.2 itself rather than providing an update?
The phone would have been in testing prior to 4.2's release... so early internal builds would have been based on 4.1.x anyway - so I can see why it's launching with 4.1. They would want to be on the ball with the 4.2 launch,,,, if it gets pushed back then people looking at buying this phone 3-6 months after launch are going to be wary about future updates.

Why strange? Show me an example of another device other than a Nexus launching with 4.2 in the same timeframe?

Show me an example of a device other than a Nexus or the Transformer tablets getting ICS prior to March or so of 2012? Show me an example of one that got an update prior to April/May or so that wasn't an *utter epic steaming turd*? All of the Transformer tablets first ICS updates were poor, Galaxy S II ICS was a steaming pile of **** for months... Hell, if you've got a carrier branded device it STILL is...

Not to mention 4.2 is one of the more buggy releases from Google, are there any devices apart from Nexus devices officially running 4.2 yet?
