Thanks for the response!
A noob question.. Why do I need to Odin the stock ND8 tar if I am already on 4.4.2 with ND8? Isn't that the same?
I didn't know you were already on ND8. In your case, you don't. ☺You're welcome!

Just to be sure...
Is this the right philz_touch_6.15.4-d2spr.tar.md5 for the Sprint Galaxy S3 from http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2spr?
Do you know the different between the d2spr and d2lte? TIA

Edit: Got it working..Thanks again for the hint in earlier post!
d2spr builds are a little old (May, LOL) but might still work. The d2lte builds are the newest. We should be seeing a new version posted any day now but 6.47.7 works great.

If you are not already on custom recovery use the Odin tar . After that just flash the zip and reboot recovery to update it.

What am I missing?

I have rooted phones for years and never had a problem until now.
I rooted a Sprint S3 a few weeks ago, installed the latest SuperSU to disable Know and it worked perfect.

Now I am trying to root a brand new S3 - KOT49H.L710VPUDND8
I OTA it to the latest ND8 4.4.2

No matter what I do or try, it will not root.

Prepped:

- USB debugging enabled
- Correct drivers
- Cable that came with phone

Tried:

1. CF Auto-Root multiple times
It gets to the red android screen, finished very quickly,
reboots and I have SuperSU. It is not rooted so I try
the latest market version but I get this error when I open it:

"There is no SU binay installed and SuperSu can not install it..."

2. I tried Odin with Philz recovery - philz_touch_6.15.4-d2spr.tar.md5
by putting it in PDA. It still has the standard recovery installed.

3. Tried using the standard recovery to flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.00.zip (read 2.01 could have issues).

4. Tried SRS Root, said it was successful but SuperSU did not appear and still no root.

-------------------------

Have any of you had this kind of issue trying to root a phone?
If so, what did you do to fix it?

I am still working on it but would love some feedback.

Thanks

D2LTE works on any LTE variant of the S3, too my understanding. In other words, Verizon and Sprint. That's why the latest Sprint specific one is old. You definitely want the D2LTE build.

CF-AutoRoot didn't work for several of us including me while it did work for some others. I wouldn't recommend it.

See the post above yours and my answer to @tuxmask at the top of this post.

You can't flash anything but official update.zip files from Samsung/Sprint with the official recovery.
4. Tried SRS Root, said it was successful but SuperSU did not appear and still no root.
I'm not familiar with that. Several people have used something called towel root to root without a custom recovery lately but I've never used that. I used the very latest D2LTE Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5 and flashed the latest SuperSU.zip but others have just gone into Philz settings and chosen the re-root option or just flashed an already rooted ROM.

Another member mentioned Towel Root which rooted it on the first try.
I looked at it but thought it was just for AT&T/Verizon.

After running it, SuperSU was able to disable Knox and I took care of the rest.

Thanks for your help

The whole purpose of CF-Auto is rooting 4.3 without tripping Knox. There's no other way to root.
CF Auto Root is not the only method of rooting a GS3 and rooting in itself does not trip Knox. Knox is tripped the instant you install a custom recovery onto the device. CF Auto may be the only way to root without tripping Knox but IMO what's the point of rooting if you are not going to install a custom recovery?

Thank you for this post. I am going to be rooting a Sprint S3 on 4.3 and wanted to make sure this method would work.

I flash phones. I flashed a phone for a friend (the Sprint S3 I'm about to root). I need to freeze the system update nag update through Titanium Backup which needs root. I also need to update the Sprint APN to a Verizon APN for MMS to work 100% correctly. I need root to do this. He doesn't need to have custom recovery.

Your reasons are your reasons. The only reason I even commented was because the guy you quoted said it was the only way to root the phone which is not the case. Also note that I said IMO (in my opinion) which is just that......my opinion.

CF-Autoroot - Is it safe or not with SECUREBOOT: ENABLE?

I just want to be very clear that I understand:

The phone I am working with is SPH-L710, with software version L710VPUDND8

On the Download Mode screen, it says Current Binary: Samsung Official, Qualcom Secureboot: ENABLE, Warranty Bit: 0, Bootloader RP SWREV: 2

On the CF-Autoroot website, there is a warning:

UNLOCK BOOTLOADERS
If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device - with the exception of Nexus devices, which will usually automatically "OEM unlock" and wipe your data !

So I am assuming that Secureboot: ENABLE means that this phone is, in fact, locked. With the "KNOX" bootloader? Secureboot == KNOX?

So Chainfire is warning me that installing CF-Autoroot will BRICK this phone? Thus, I cannot root? I thought root was possible with knox.

It's hard to search for a definitive answer about this on the forums, as the technology keeps progressing and changing. I never know if I am looking at the most current information, or if it applies to this specific device in this specific scenario. I just want to understand, if this SPH-L710 phone is upgraded to Android 4.4.2 version ND8 with secureboot, what is still possible to do with this device? I do not care about any warranty bit or flash counter or whatever, this is a used phone on a 3rd party carrier now. I just want to know if i can:
-Root?
-Install Clockworkmod Recovery to allow backup/restore?
-Flash .zips in Clockworkmod Recovery? (Ting MMS APNs fix, for example)
-Install CM11 ROM? Or other AOSP ROM?
-Install custom kernels?

I have never owned a phone with locked bootloader, and my other Galaxy S3 has not received this horrid OTA, so I really have no idea what is safe to do to my wife's phone. If you know the answers to the above, I would greatly appreciate your input!!

EDIT: This thread has answered some of my questions about KNOX, However, I'm still not even sure if I have KNOX or not. When I am in download mode it says "Secure Boot", the word "KNOX" does not appear anywhere... This is so confusing. Does this KNOX FAQ even apply to my phone???

I just want to be very clear that I understand:
Hi! The Warranty = 0 means you have Knox.

You can root all you want. Only some people have successfully rooted with CF-AutoRoot on ND8. The easiest way is to Odin the very latest Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5 and use its option in its settings to re-root.

Instead you could manually download the latest SuperSU.zip from Chainfire's website and flash it in recovery. FYI Philz is the only recovery which doesn't have any issues with TouchWiz 4.4.2.

You can also use the TowelRoot app to root without having a custom recovery. This is the only method that won't cause your Warranty bit too be flipped to 1. Having a custom recovery is what permanently flips the Warranty bit, not rooting.

Just an FYI ca auto root still trips Knox because it in fact flashes a temp recovery to root the phone

Unfortunately this kit didn't work for me. I have a stock SPH-L710 on Ting's network (a MVNO under Sprint) on KK version 4.4.2.. I tried CF-Auto Root, which appeared to be successful at first, but when opening SuperSU, it would say SuperSU has stopped responding. Then I tried Towel Root from geohot. That appeared successful as well, but I had the same SuperSU has stopped responding message upon launching SuperSU.

THEN, I tried mskip's method using his unified toolkit. After installing the ADB drivers and discovering the hidden "developer options" menu (which I've never seen before.. I've been on Android 4.3.1 with CarbonRom on my other Galaxy S3), I successfully backed up, installed a custom recovery, installed busy box, and rooted my phone. Not sure why any of the other methods didn't work for me, but I'm glad I was able to make it happen using mskip's utility.

Just sharing my experience for any others who might have a similar issue! :good:

Just some quick questions:

-Will this trip Knox and hardbrick my device or not?
-It says it's version 1.26 but the latest as of now is 2.46. Does it still work and will it update when it scans for the su binaries after opening SuperSU appJ?

sph l710 stock 4.4.2

Something off topic:

-If I flash a custom rom for a d2spr and convert to ClearTalk, will I be able to have service or would I need to find another rom? or radios?

Thanks for your time and patience:good:
