SPL Hboot?

Hey, I was wondering, what is SPL or HBOOT? Does my phone have it already, do I need it, what does it do? Thanks.

I am currently on a MIUI Rom, used to use CM, but no longer, if that helps.

The hboot is the hardware bootloader. Basically, your phone's BIOS.
The SPL is the second program loader. It loads the recovery or the os, depending on what it is told to.
