Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me the date of the security patch you currently have? I'm would like to know if you were able to get the latest patch.

I am using US version unlocked with the security patch (May 2019) but I tried the verizon rom 20a and the OTA worked for me.

Thanks again for the reply.

So you're on the same security patch as me (May 2019). I'm just trying to figure out if I'm getting the latest security patched from Sprint.

When I was on stock Oreo 8.1, I was updated to the October 2019 security patch.

Is the May 2019 security patch the latest patch Sprint rolled out for Pie?

So far Sprint has not released Android Pie, but its latest firmware has the October 2019 security patch.
The pie version with the May security patch is for the LG US unlocked model, not sprint model.

OK I see, but what I'm trying to find out, is if you can still get security patch updates once you perform a crossflash, which it appears you cannot.

When I got my LG V40, I was on Oreo 8.1, and getting a security patch update once a month. Before I crossflashed my device, I was on the security patch October 2019 update.

After I crossflashed my device, I was no longer capable of getting the latest security patch, even when I flashed back to an Oreo 8.1 KDZ, I was stuck with the security patch that KDZ was built on, and unable to pull the latest security patch update.

So it appears once you crossflash your device, you're stuck with whatever security patch that KDZ was built with.

I really don't know what happens. I installed the Verizon 20a build and the OTA works.

What carrier is your LGV40? And what firmware 8.1 did you downgrade? sprint?

I really don't know what happens. I installed the Verizon 20a build and the OTA works.
I decided to try the Verizon firmware, and you're right, the OTA security patches download and get applied.

The Verizon firmware appears to work with Sprint data, since I'm still capable of getting Sprint service from my provider (Tello). Though, I don't get any LTE 4G data (get 3G only), which I don't care about since I certainly don't get enough data to enjoy such fast speeds. Personally, I'd rather get the latest Pie security patches than have LTE.

Other than no LTE speeds, are there any cons to using the Verizon firmware on a Sprint phone?

possibly the verizon firmware is more optimized and the latest verizon version has an October security patch and more. I installed the verizon rom and updated to the latest version and the data works perfectly for me LTE, but, I guess it doesn't grab all the necessary bands to have the best possible data.

But everything works. Data LTE, voice and mms, also RSC. It doesn't grab the signal very well as in the sprint or US unlocked rom, but it works. I re-installed the US unlocked version. I think it's better

The US unlocked version hasn't gotten any security patched since the May 2019 one therefore there won't be any ota updates till LG releases another security patch

Since Sprint has not released Pie yet, likely they don't have any updates available. Therefore you are stuck with the May revision. The only updates available from Sprint are for Android 8

I installed the Verizon KDZ on my Sprint variant and updated it to the latest security patch. Though, now I want to go back to either Oreo or the US unlocked firmware, however I'm getting a "0x6004" error when trying to flash back the other firmwares.

Since you were able to flash back to US unlocked after flashing the Verizon, I was wondering if there were any specific steps that need to be done to flashback? Thanks for any advice.

I really don't know how to help you. I installed the verizon rom and updated to lastes build and then I reinstalled the US unlocked rom again without errors

Thanks for the reply. I think flashing the Verizon fiirmware via LGUP gave me a firmware with a locked bootloader.

I tried to see what happens by choosing erase chip in LGUP, and I get an error stating the phone is locked, which is probably why I can't flash another firmware. So I'm guessing I would need to get this firmware unlocked to be able to flash another firmware version.

I did'nt have any issues flashing the US unlocked cersions of Oreo and Pie.

I guess I'm stuck with using Verizons firmware. This firmware seems to have some issues on a Sprint variant. For the most part calls work on data, but I sometimes get texting errors.

I found a fix for my problem. Well, it at least worked for me and my configuration.

If anyone was is in my boat, and has a Sprint LG V40, flashed it with a Verizon Pie KDZ using LGUP found in this tutorial (LGUP for all), then tried to flash to a different firmware and got "0x6004" error. You can try the following to hopefully bypass the error and flash to another firmware.

  • Visit this thread [LG G7] FIX Error 0x2000 LGUP3
  • Download the LGUP_Common .rar file linked in step 3
  • Extract it
  • Copy the extracted LGUP_Common.dll file into the "common" directory of your LGUP installation folder (same as you followed in the LGUP for all tutorial) replacing the original file.
  • Run LGUP again, and hopefully you wont get that error again and you'll be able to flash another firmware

A word of warning to Sprint LG V40 owners. DO NOT flash a Verizon KDZ to your phone. If you do, you might be stuck with 3G service, and find service drops easily. Stick to a US unlocked firmware (linked in this thread). I've been using the Android Pie US unlocked firmware, and so far no issues with data connectivity.

I am not responsible if something goes wrong...
install lg usb drivers (be sure your device can adb. enable usb debugging, open command and put adb devices. check notification on the device and hit always. also Switch between all USB connection modes from the mobile so that Windows installs all the drivers
install lg up
Put LGUP_command.dll it into the folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common ( if there is no common folder, create one and put the file there )
now...
put device in download mode
power off device
connect usb cable to pc, but not the phone
Hold and keep phone volume up
Plug your USB Cable to your phone while holding volume up, already in download mode, release volume up button
now go to device manager an check in ports/lge the value number for example com3, save it
Then go back to C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP
Hold the shift key and right click on a free space.
Choose to open a command prompt or PowerShell in Windows 10
After oppening it, type cmd and hit enter.
now you need to put this

lgup_cmd.exe com3 “C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common\LGUP_Common.dll” “C:\Users\your desktop username\Desktop\pie.kdz

and hit enter, but need to change the com number value. for example mine was com3. if yours is com2, com5 or another just change the number.
and that is. if you do it right then it will start flashing and you will see the progress on the mobile and the powershell
Thank you for this!

I just bought an unlocked V40 (formerly Sprint) from eBay, and I loved the phone but immediately ran into problems getting it to run on TMobile (I could not send MMS and the phone kept trying to update on Sprint servers, locking me out every time I turned it on). Making matters worse, my network settings were grayed-out, and there was no option to manually set them.

Your post allowed me to install Android 9 Pie and fix all of that. One thing I will add (because this was not intuitive for me) is that I accessed debug mode by Settings > System > About phone > Software info then tapping Build number 7 times. This was completely hidden and unintuitive for me, and I found it accidentally on a Verizon support forum. But it was the key to setting up ADB and following the rest of your instructions.

Thanks again. This phone is so great now. I was even able to delete Facebook and Instagram after the Pie install.

everything works perfect with total comptability, but I can't confirm if fastboot can be accessed after crossflash. Also, there is no option of wifi calling or calling plus, I cannot confirm OTA, because I installed android pie and it is the latest version for US unlocked. ***Maybe if you install the latest android 8 oreo before ,then you can test if ota works***

Have you tried the *#*#4636#*#* options to provision yet? I have the ATT version of the phone with a T Mobile SIM in it that shows options for WiFi calling. It doesn't work though even checked in the menu.

Has anyone cross flashed an ATT LG40 on Oreo to the US unlocked ROM yet using this guide?
