I see that I'm not the only one noticing that the phone consumes really a lot (and is very hot !) when idle. I will try to test if there is any benefit with "always display ON" (I switched it OFF since the beginning). For me it seems that the phone nearly never go to S3 sleep mode.

What APK do you recommend to observe and track that ? I'd like to make some long tests (over a week) and compare different settings, launcher etc.

I've also noticed that my phone doesn't go into deep sleep enough; it can spend up to 40% of time at lowest CPU frequency which means only around ~55% is deep sleep time.

Root needed :(.
THAT’S ABSOLUTELY WRONG!
YOU CAN USE IT WITHOUT ROOT & WITHOUT UNLOCKED BOOTBLOCK!

as i wrote, please use adb command as described below! (see here too!)

1.) be sure to have usb-debugging allowed at phone/developer setup
2.) connect your phone to your pc
3.) If not exist, install "LG G5 usb driver" to your pc
4.) if not exist, install "mini adb" to your pc
5.) open cmd shell window ( execute command "cmd")
6.) execute command "adb devices" in CMD window
7.) if everything goes right, you should see your device now
8.) be sure, that "betterbatterystats.apk" from xda is installed
9.) type in following command:
"adb -d shell pm grant com.asksven.betterbatterystats_xdaedition android.permission.BATTERY_STATS"
like described here

If everything is ok, you have grant the permission to get stats now.

attention:
* enter all commands without ""
* all needed drivers and tools are linked!

I just read the description of the app in the store, and obviously made a big confusion :)

Thanks for your help, I installed the XDA version, and granted the permissions. Let's now make some stats !!!

Did you really forgot to press the thanks button?:D

I have some special apps they never sleeps, so i have a minimum of 12% (0,5%p.H) drain per day.( This result persists after my change to Nougat! )

Without root, it was not helpful to try greenify app because all power you have spend, was needed from greenify! So the result was +/- 0 :p

BTW: There are some things, you often forget!
1.) Knock on modus of your phone takes power too! To disable it, spend battery power.
2.) same with the "always on display" at your lockscreen
3.) LG MLT logging service takes mem and power!
4.) W-Lan background scanning takes also power! Disable notification and scan if you do not need.
5.) Mail and FB or WA uses many power.
6.) unsused apps sometimes need power! Freeze them if you do not need.
7.) "Ok Google" function needs power because the microphone is always on!
8.) Live background drains your battery!
9.) "background data enabled" takes power because some apps with adds drains during they are working!

Guys I want to bring my experience, hoping to be helpful. ;)
I had the exact same problem that many of you have reported, excessive battery drain and phone that he never went to sleep mode.
Reading around (here and on other blogs) it seems there is a bug with "google backup" on some devices, so a couple of days ago I disabled it in the settings and situation seems to be back to normality!

Can you maybe go into detail how to disable/tweak those things? You just mentioned them, without telling what should be changed. For example (all without root of course):

1. how can I disable the knock on feature?
2. what is LG MLT logging service, how to disable it, if so, any disadvantages from disabling it?

Also, doesn't betterbatterystats also drains (more) power if installed? Does it make sense to install it, if you're happy with battery, would you make it worse by installing it, because it logs/debugs in the background?

@mkdr
specially for you:;)

1.) Knock on modus of your phone takes power too! To disable it, spend battery power.
you can use "quickshortcutmaker" or "SDMaid" or "V10 Hidden Setings" app to create a link to "Knock out"; than disable it.
(V10 Hidden Setings is the easiest way to do)
Attention: YOU WILL LOSE THE "knock to switch screen off" function too!!! as long as this feature is disabled!

2.) same with the "always on display" at your lockscreen
-> Setup->Display->"Always-on" option set to off!
Attention: YOU WILL LOSE some given informations on lockscreen! as long as this feature is disabled!

3.) LG MLT logging service takes mem and power!
open dialer and enter: *#546368#*850# -> open SVC menu and than LDB -> disable MLT and reboot

4.) W-Lan background scanning takes also power! Disable notification and scan if you do not need.
->setup -> WiFi-> AdvancedWiFi ->disable "notification for open WiFi" and for "Keep WiFi on when screen is off"
Attention: YOU WILL LOSE notification of available WIFi networks ! as long as this feature is disabled!

5.) Mail and FB or WA uses many power.
if not needed, you can disable Push Mail and sync of every social network app like E-mail; WA;etc.
COLOR="Red"]Attention: YOU WILL LOSE notification of new mails etc ! as long as this feature is disabled!

6.) unsused apps sometimes need power! Freeze them if you do not need.
->setup -> apps freeze all unnecessary apps if possible

7.) "Ok Google" function needs power because the microphone is always on!
open google app and enter app setup menu section "voice" and disable "ok google"
COLOR="Red"]Attention: YOU WILL LOSE possibility of awakening your device with "ok google"! as long as this feature is disabled!

8.) Live background drains your battery!
don’t use live backgrounds!

9.) "background data enabled" takes power because some apps with adds drains during they are working!
->setup->mobile data-> enable "data saver" option (don’t forget your necessary apps to prevent against saving!!! This is possible for every app!)

about "betterbattery stats":
there are two kinds to work for "betterbatterystats"!
normally BBS takes the system logs to calc battery stats. This takes really less power but give you the information you want.
If it is necessary, you can enable "watchdog" mode to get more informations. This will drain more than the normal mode!
More important is to grant the permissions that BBS needs! Specially on our G5! I have described this procedure a view posts ago. (106)

Hope this info will help you to reduce your battery drain.

I am not satisfied about 3). I just googled it and it seems to be some kind of spy app, is that true? I can't believe that this is the case. Do I need root to disable it? What happens if I disable it? Will OTAs still work without it?

couln’t say yes or no because i don’t know more. Maybe this allegation isn’t true, but disabling MLT service is possible without root, and maybe this could give you a saver feeling. Here it did! :D
Anyway! At my phone bad effects doesn’t occur after disabling MLT service until now.

BTW:
The "MLT service running yes or no" question is older than our G5. As i know first sighting began +/- 2012!
and...
Reading a story at many places, does not guarantee that they is true!
I found this: http://devtester.ro/projects/lg-firmwares/mlt.php

Stating it is spying for specific keywords, scanning your phone and sends them to LG servers, known keywords:

"suicide", "child p***" and others

Is this some sick joke? How can that be allowed in normal countries for example US, EU!? I can't believe that can be true??

keep calm!
disable MLT and forget it!
BTW: Do U use FB or WA? :D
My live time is to short to think about spying.

Please let us now return back to topic!

thank you for your guide, very useful! :)
I tried to understand my insane drain with this app, and I found out that on page ALARMS I have this com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox which has hundreds of wakeups during screen off time (98% of total ). Does someone knows something about this issue?
In case you are wondering I don't have voice search always active and my GPS is not turned on.

God, I just had a shocking stat today; 50% battery used, 1.4 hr SoT but 4 hours of wakelock out of 10 hours off charge...that's so broken. I will use betterbatterystats to get a better look; previously I used GSAM monitor but even with adb permissions it is not sufficiently comprehensive on the wakelock detail.

I disabled the cards for google now and it's starting to look a little bit better. I no longer get awakes every other minute...

That's a lie, after a full recharge and using it briefly before returning to my pocket I'm finding wakelocks again when my phone claims to be in sleep.
