I might be missing something, or it is some other problem? I've flashed a safe Abyss Kernel using temp CWM beeing in stock LRG 404, but phone didn't boot behind the Sam logo. I then flashed stock LRG image with PC Odin and it returned to same (no data loss).
Is Abyss kernel flashable from ICS? Its not clear from threads Ive read...

No.
No Spen without samsung touchwizz framework. And no touchwizz framework on aosp roms like CM9 and 10.
You cant boot on ICS with a GB kernel (abysskernel), abyss kernel is just used to boot in recovery and be able to do safe flash/wipe.
Dont use the GB/abyss kernel crap like proposed in this thread, flash CM9 like said in the CM9 thread in dev section (faq in OP), then flash CM10 like said in CM10 thread in dev section.
This thread should be closed, this step by step is more confusing than usefull.

I am getting stuck on step 10 here.

maybe all of your phones driver didn't install correctly when you plug in through kies

If you have a safe, rooted, ROM, then you can start on step 14 (or 13 if that tickles your fancy).
On a side note. My landscape orientations have become flipped. Anyone got a fix?

How about flashing GB kernel only with CWM (like GB SpeedMod)?
Yes, the phone wont boot because you're in ICS ROM. so all you need to do is boot into recovery make a backup of your current ICS ROM then flash the CM10.
When you want to go back to ICS just restore your backup from recovery and flash any ICS kernel again like SpeedMod (ICS) or Stock.
