cheers mate, i think ive worked out the problem, when im clicking install from SD card its going from the internal one not the SD card thats installed

ive downloaded your file but i cant see it in CWM as it wont let me find it, tried mounting SD card but no help either, dont suppose theres something im missing? think i have the files, just need to know how to put them on!!!
I had to reinstall CWM twice before it let me access my external SD. Make sure you have the latest version of CWM installed

Will CWM not let you select 'external SD card' for 'install zip'?
nope, no option, if i click mounts and storage and mount ext sd it doesnt do anything

its clearly detecting my SD card though as it goes straight into CWM, is there a newer version than 6.0.4.6, although i dont see what difference it will make as everyone else in this thread has managed it with this version...

I switched to TWRP myself, so not sure about current CWM version. Going from memory, though, I *think* in CWM you select 'install' first, then maybe the choices for zip internal (or emmc), external, sideload, etc. You shouldn't have to mount first. And just to be clear, and I apologize if you already know this, but you use the volume button to scroll up and down, and the 'n' button to select; the power button takes you backwards. I kept trying to use the power button to select instead of the 'n' button, which of course got me nowhere. I personally like TWRP better.

Your recollection is correct (install zip -> select external/internal/etc.). No need to mount anything.

hi, yea it is, boots up all the time into it from the image i put onto my sd card, cant get any further tho, its a nightmare i dont know what im doing wrong, i might just give up!!!
So, if you remove your SD card you can boot to CWM? Good, now format your ext SD and put whatever zips you want to flash on it. Insert SD, reboot to CWM. There should be no image on your ext SD, ie no booting from ext SD, but you should have access to the files on it

ART and P.A.'s GAPPS

se1961...
you recommend within your post to download P.A.'s GAPPS ('step 4') and install it ('step 11'); subsequently, under 'step 11' you comment that "...enabling [ART (Android Runtime)] made a very big difference for me in terms of smoothness".

However, within the article "Meet ART, Part 1" that you provide a link to, the following advisory appears in bolded type:

"Warning: Do not try this with the Paranoid Android (or other AOSP) build right now. There is an incompatibility with the current gapps package that causes rapid crashing, making the interface unusable." (published: 11/6/2013)

You do not mention this conflict--between your recommendation to install P.A.'s GAPPS and the specific warning not to in the article you cite--within your post. This isn't a criticism--just an observation. You post helped me through the process of updating my NookHD+, compared with the particularly anemic (or plain incorrect) procedure described within the posts of others.

I followed the instructions in this thread AND enabled ART. Works great.

Some nightlies will cause problems as they 'break' ART. Keep an eye on the discussions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2600572 for comments on which nightlies work with ART.

Also some apps don't work with ART - but I've yet to come across one!

Thanks

Thanks so much for this excellent guide! I had gotten to a place with the Nook HD+ where it was on CM 10.2, but recovery was not working, could not read from microSD, etc. Yes, I had "half-hosed" it. :) But your method pulled it out of the muck, and I am happily on Kitkat now! Great job, and thanks again!

SD card capacity reduced after burning image.

I'm using a class 4, 8 GB Sansa micro sd card to burn the emmc-cwm-early3 recovery file but every time I do it the Properties window shows the card is now 856 MB total capacity, obviously not enough space to backup the stock ROM.

I'm currently moving files from a 32 GB card to see if it might work but I'm thinking the result will be the same.

What am I missing here?

You need to backup to internal memory instead of the SD. All SDs will burn to that size.

Then I'm confused. What is the point of having the option to backup to the external sd card if I should backup to the Nook's internal card?
If you can't tell, this is the first time I've attempted this operation after reading countless posts here.

I ended up using a partioning tool to extend the partition then chose "backup to external sd card"
Afterward, I moved the "clockworkmod" file to my computer's HD for safe keeping but on copying I got an error message:

Error 0x80070570: The file is corrupted and unreadable.

Searching on the error code I found the most common problem is with the Windows registry.
Not sure where to go form here.

It does not matter where you put it the first time if you are going to copy it to your PC anyway. The option to back up to external SD is there if you have room. And the clockworkmod is a folder, not a file. The folder contains many files.

Sorry, I meant to type "files"
I'd put them on my computer if I could copy them but apparently I cannot.

How are you trying to copy, by putting the card in the PC or using the USB cable?

The card is in the computer. Looks like the card may be going bad.

If I save the backup on the Nook don't I need to copy somewhere it so it doesn't get wiped when I install the new ROM?

I've made another backup to the internal sd card but I'm hesitant to proceed installing Kit Kat without being able to verify the backup is ok.

The backup exited with no error so I decided I didn't need to be concerned about it.
Went ahead and installed CM 11. It's such a huge improvement over BN's software I can't believe how much better the Nook performs.

Thanks for your input and assistance.

It is stored to the media partition which is not wiped when you install a new ROM.
