Possibly they've increase the contrast, something seems a bit different.

Just got a popup for mine too (non LTE AT&T version). Forgive my ignorance, but if I run it, I assume I lose my nice and tidy root.

no, because with unlocked bootloader you can just flash an unsecure kernel again...
