"Keynote: When I restored using the tar myself, it did not remove data, so wipe beforehand as a necessary precaution."

To clarify this, what if I were to flash this with Odin over my current (stock TW, rooted) ROM? A few people in this thread seem to say that they haven't had a problem, but I'd like to verify that at the most all I will need is a backup - just in case.
Yes. I didn't wipe anything. No problems, restored my nandroid afterward because stock is so drab.

Simpler for Stock Rooted?

Actually, since I'm on the stock TW ROM - and my device is still automatically downloading OTA updates - shouldn't I simply restore the stock recovery, and unroot, in order to complete the NJ2 update? No flashing of the entire tar needed in my case, or is that oversimplifying it?

You could do that, but I couldn't get the OTA to flash (status 7, never seen it in stock recovery... A few others reported the same) even after fully unrooting. And in reality it will be faster to flash the tar and save yourself some steps. The OTA won't flash period unless you are fully unrooted and stock recovery.

Force Closes In

After flashing the full NJ2 tar, deleting /data and attempting to restore from my ND8 backup, I ended up with an (unsurprisingly?) broken install - with many issues. There must be an obvious action which I am missing in the process.

What is most concerning, however, is that force closes were introduced for apps like com.google.process.gapps, Google Play Services, and countless others. What I assumed to be /system conflicts - which could be resolved with reverting to a backup - in fact survived a full ND8 stock recovery + /system format + restoring most recent ND8 backup + dalvik/cache wipe. What am I missing that could have brought on these force closes; perhaps a conflict with a partition, or an incomplete backup?

I should note that solutions discussed for the force close issue did not resolve this for me, and so I'm hoping the root cause is only a simple step which I've glanced over.

Edit: I used clockworkmod 6.0.4.5 to create and restore the backups. Perhaps this is the root cause of the issue?

I highly recommend Philz Recovery over all the others.

Why are you trying to restore your nd8 backup? Just factory reset then Odin nj2 and do fresh installs of apps. Restoring broken backups is likely going to keep breaking it.

More than agreed! To steer those who may be coming to this thread because of the OTA notification, indeed: your best bet may be to simply make a Titanium Backup and selectively restore.

Exactly. And don't flash nj2 tar and then try to restore an nd8 backup. That won't put you back to nd8. Recovery backups don't change your baseband back. You might as well discard your nd8 backups now. Or maybe just do custom restores of only data. But stop trying to restore system from nd8 after you already Odin flashed nj2.

Sorry to ask some dumb questions here as my daily is my S5. I powered in my old S3 from Virgin Mobile to find an update available. It won't take the OTA as I'm unrooted but still have a custom recovery. So...is there a tar for the Virgin Mobile update and what would be the best way to flash it and stay rooted? Any help is greatly appreciated and I've being doing my reading FIRST and haven't really found anything pertaining to the VM S3.

If your still on Ndc, just Odin the stock ndc tar. Then take the ota to nj3. There is no nj3 tar for Virgin Mobile. Even on sammobile it's just an update zip.

A couple of tips: use philz recovery not CWM, and custom backup everything. Don't expect a clean transition after flashing the NJ2 ROM, although users here have reported it. Make sure to have Titanium Backups, and expect time restoring everything if necessary.

If you're not interested in potentially starting from scratch, I'd recommend long-pressing the OTA notification from your drawer, and simply hiding the notification. :victory:

Thanks

I have a rooted Sprint S3. I have unrooted and rooted it for updates. Each time I root it I have a panic attack. I have been getting Android System Update notification for a week or two. It annoys my OCD. I tried many ways to remove the notification but to no avail. I thank you for this information you have given. Everyone here is an angel one way or another. I am not the brightest person. If I can do it anyone can. Read and and be patient. I downloaded the L710PUDNJ2 tar file. I used ODIN 3.07 to install it. I went outside and shoveled snow. Came in and my phone was updated but unrooted. I downloaded the CF Autoroot for my phone. It has a small tar file. I used ODIN 3.07 to install it. It is a quick install. Phone rebooted. I ran rootchecker and it is rooted again. Thanks again for all the information here.

Here's an idea for anybody updating, don't know if it's been tried yet. What if we Odin the NJ2,downgrade the kernel to older ND8 or NDC,root the device, then upgrade the kernel to the new one? We've been having to do this with AT&T Galaxy S5's to root without tripping knox. Any ideas?
