Has anyone experienced on overly aggressive closing of apps by the OS on the phone?

I run "Conversations" as an XMPP messenger on my phone (https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=conversations&fdid=eu.siacs.conversations). Previously, had it installed on a couple Samsung devices without issue.

Eventually, after the Honor 5x is inactive, Conversations will be closed and I cannot receive messages until the app is loaded again. Even when telling the app to keep itself in the foreground (by way of notification drawer), the OS still closes the app when the phone is inactive for a while.

I would assume this issue is with EMUI, but I am not sure. Can anyone else shed some light on this?

@rdbud, Thank you, that appears to be right on. This phone is my wife's phone, and she confirmed that the app stays running now. Good find.
Keep in mind that it won't protect any subsequent apps you install. So if you install any new apps, you should go back in and make sure it's protected.

You can also "lock" an app in memory by hitting the Recents app square and then sliding down on any app. It will place a lock icon next to the app to show it is protected.
That's an interesting feature, but is it the same as the protecting the apps in the settings? Or does it keep that app locked open so switching is easier? I have all my apps protected, but none of them have locks in the Recents app.

The only true solution that many dont know is
Just open the "phone accelerator" app .
Then open settings and then protected apps
And check the app that u want to run in the background .
Once done , now check ! U wil be able to receive notifications from the app u wished to run in the background.
