As long as you have the matching 3.04 firmware, then yes. If not then it might be better to use the 1.31 and accept the OTA update so that it updates firmware to match the 3.04 software.

if i'm on a 3.04 ROM, doesn't that mean i have the firmware? isn't 'ROM' and 'firmware' the same thing?

No they are not the same thing. If you have been running the stock rom the entire time you had it then firmware should be the same. It would have updated when you got te 3.04 OTA.

The firmware is the version of items in locked partitions like hboot, touchscreen drivers, adsp, tz, recovery etc. The software version is the version of the ROM you are currently running.

Flashed 1.29 and touchscreen is no longer working. Tried plugging it in via USB to put 1.31 on the storage so I could flash it, but when I go to copy it I get an error message saying that the device has been disconnected or has stopped responding - even though I can go into the storage and delete stuff, I can't add anything for some reason. Is there a way for me to flash 1.31 via fastboot? If not, I'm pretty sure I'm screwed and have a paperweight on my hands.

I did this because I'm trying to unlock the damned thing and haven't been able to for some reason - kept getting the error message that vDMC has FC'd and apparently that's something that is needed as it has the hidden menu in it to get to the sim lock.

UPDATE - Attempted to flash the zip file via fastboot. Failed due to unrecognized partition. Attempted to push the zip file via adb, unable to because I got this error "adbd cannot run as root in production builds." Well WTF?!?!

UPDATE - Was able to put phone into USB mode via adb and copy the 3.04 file - since that was the original version on the phone apparently. I did notice though that now the soft keys - home and back - no longer light up. Also, SU doesn't ask for permissions for anything. Brought up Terminal Emu, typed SU and got 1|[email protected]:/ $

ALL I WANNA DO IS UNLOCK THE GD THING! It shouldn't be this effing hard!

Did you try flashing the latest TWRP recovery and use it to install SU?
Do you need SU in order to do the sim unlock?

Hmm..

I downloaded 1.3, and flashed with twrp. In s-on rinning OMJs 1.7.

Followed screen prompts and now sti=uck at "installing" screen with 0.00%.

I cant seem to get the phone to reset? Tried every button combo.

What do I do? Wait for bat to die?

Is this still relevant?

I want to go back to stock, to update stock Rom, without RUU'n.

S-off 1.56 firewater
Xxxxxx.4 firmware, I want to update all the way to .9/.11 firmware, is this the way to go??

Edit:
Well I fudge up big time...
I downloaded the 1.31 and installed it per instructions but I can't make any touch gestures when the phone boots.
Am I screwed?

More than likely you will run into the same problem as above with the touchscreen due to the firmware mis-match. Remember this is not a RUU that will reset your firmware, but just a ROM that is stock.
That was pretty fast. Thanks @crushalot,

I am trying to GSM unlock my phone, the easiest way. Is there a way I can do this without having to downgrade to stock and s-off? Thanks.

I don't think you need S-Off. You should be able to look for a stock rom with same base as you are currently running (4.4.2 I guess).
Once you load the stock rom you should be able to do the GSM unlock, but not 100% sure.
