To be blunt: it's his own fault he did the update via Kies, he did not inform himself and he brought himself into this situation. May this be a lesson to him.
And to actually answer the question: no there is no way. Downgrade, root, upgrade. Chances are high you can preserve data if you explicitely chose no-wipe ROMs to get the job done. I cannot answer the question though which ROMs are wipe and which are no-wipe. Research this yourself. Good luck.

To preserve root, do the upgrade using CWM App if your friend does not want to afford MobileODIN Pro. I put up a guide here in the dev forums.

Thank you schaggo.. Not everyone who owns a fast car is a pro racing driver.. :p

Which way to downgrade(lets say back to KK9) without risking binary counter increase?

Thanks.

Corrupted download. Redownload the file.

Get stock ROM. Flash using either CWM or MobileODIN. Ticking/chosing the right options will leave you with a stock device.
Thx, I'm not sure CWM is on there. CWM does work very easy. Just put it on the mem card, and load it from CWM. At least I have superuser already installed. Not sure if that includes CWM

No offense djidji777, but can someone else also confirm that using ODIN to downgrade from LA4 to KK9 will NOT increase the binary counter?

Thanks.
Yes,Confirmed. using PC Odin to downgrade any stock ROM, won't increase flash counter.

Just remember You can NEVER use Odin to flash custom ROM/Kernel.

Here all ROMs are Stock ROms

Can i use mobile odin lite?

Rooting

Here is post, how to root galaxy Note

Device Which are Not Directly rootable, can Root this way.
- Dont use PC odin to flash such ROM
- Already Flashed - then first Flash Directly rootable ROM
- Install Mobile Odin Pro from market, and Flash Not directly rootable ROM, with Mobile odin with 'ever root' option Enable.

Note : After update if getting keyboard error, "null null", flash with mobile odin with CSC file.

Here's a question for you: I downloaded the N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_TGY.zip file (HongKong). I cannot unzip it. Zip doesn't recognise it, and stuffit asks for a password (I use a Mac). If there is a password, what is it? Or is this supposed to be the actual firmware file? I thought CWM uses .zip files, but usually those can be opened/unzipped
There are in fact two files with the same firmware. Are they different? If so, in what way?

There is a third HongKong firmware. How does that one compare?

AT&T LTE Version

I searched through the thread, hoping that someone had asked, but nothing came up. So, will any of these root methods work on the new AT&T LTE SG Note? Dr. Ketan, thank you for starting this thread, I've really learned some valuable info.

Use a download manager
Ehm.. I have none. I use a Mac which limits the choice if any exist at all. I'm in China, and although I use a good VPN, connection is a hit and miss...

try to read OP carefully :)

new ROMs for Serbia (Telenor) and Romania (Vodafone) - N7000XXLA6_N7000OXXLA1
Yep, you are right. In this case, as I did check the source, the link is the same download location, so that doesn't help.

Read first few line of first post, first page

Thanks! I did mis sthat when I was reading through it. Luckily Stuffit on Mac can read all kinds of zip and other compression formats, because zip for Mac didn't get the file open. I don't know if the unzip worked because I ha dto get to work before it finished unzipping.

Well, I've been pointed towards a link ( http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/177988-noob-guide-rooting-flashing-using-mac.html )containing instructions using unrevoke and then titanium backup and rom manager. Since my unit already had superuser installed I assumed it was rooted, but when I installed Titanium backup I wa sactually confronted with the notification that it wasn't rooted.. D'oh!
So I hope this unrevoke method works. The link I was given seems to provide instructions for HTC units, an dI already noticed that the Galaxy Note handles USB connection to a computer differently (i.e. my unit when connected via USB, cannot just mount to my computer. It first has to be disconnected, then USB debugging selected, then reconnected, and THEN I can mount it.

My file after unzipping is called: N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_N7000XXKJ6_HOME.tar.md5

Since according to the instructions it should be a tar file, does that mean I should remove the ".md5" extension?

Also, I have found a way to flash ROMs on a Mac using CWM, but CWM doesn't use tar files. Can someone point me to a process that I can install dr.ketan's ROMs using a Mac? I found that this question remains suspiciously unanswered. Surely I'm not the only Mac user on this forum?
