Without knowing exactly what is draining your battery we can't be of much help. There are a lot of other posts, and topics around xda about battery drain.

If you think it's the modem that's causing it you could always try a different modem. Do you have poor reception? What ROM, kernel, and modem are you using? Are you using BetterBatteryStats to track what is draining your battery?

newbie-q: does loading new kernel allow unlocking sim?

I have no idea where the SIM lock stuff resides.

Does rooting and loading a CyanogenMod kernel allow unlocking the StraightTalk Galaxy S2 phone (SGH-S959G) to allow using other SIM cards when travelling abroad?

Thanks for any help in understanding this issue.

As the topic states, there are a bunch of prebundled apps that come with cyanogen I'd like to remove & replace (listed below); is it as simple as removing them from the .zip and adding the ones I want? Or is there more to it?
Also the apps I want to add, can I also include their backup data from the /data folder or does that have to be done after?
I think its just as simple as, extracting the zip files, removing the apks, and adding the ones I want, then repacking the zip?

Replace:
- Apollo with Poweramp
- Trebeck (or w/e it is) with Nova Prime
- AOSP Keyboard with SwiftKeyboard
- a custom kernel (just copy/replace the kernel zips files with whatever comes in cyanogens zip?)
- some others, but you get the gist

Remove:
- DSP Manager
- Exchange Services
- Email
- News & Weather
- some others (I know about the list(s) of safe apps to delete [1][2])

Add:
- Fonts
- Apps that I always install on a fresh install (Titanium Backup, Busybox, ROM Toolbox, etc)

I know about This Thread explaining how to build your own ROM, but I feel like that is more complicated process for (what seems simple) what I want to do.

help plz!

Titanium backup will uninstall most if not all apps you want to remove and then just install the ones you want and then convert them to system apps using Titanium also. That should do it unless I misunderstand what your doing.

(2) upon completing Q1; I have a very small internal phone memory, somewhere around 1/2gb but I have a 32gb SDcard -- is it possible to format my SDcard to allow it to be used as "phone memory" so I can have more apps installed? I know there is the "move to SD" options, but this is not wgst I am looking for since this does not work for widget apps. Also I have a difficult time downloading apps without getting the "insufficient space" error via the play store during app installs
I am so tired of having to uninstall apps just to install or test new ones. There has got to be a way to use my SDcard as phone memory

I have:
- 100mb out of 1.97gb on Internal Storage (/system)
- 7.82gb out of 11.36gb on Internal Storage (/sdcard0)
- 14.84gb out of 29.32 on SD Card (/sdcard1)

So even if I could combine /system and /sdcard0 to become /system and only have 1 sdcard partition would suffice
So I just did a complete wipe (kernel, and rom script via mr-cook), and fresh install of CyanogenMod 10.2 & AJK Kernel; i installed NO OTHER APPS (other than GApps); I completely deleted and re-partitioned my sdcard0 and sdcard1;

I still only had 700mb free on my /system - WHAT THE HELL?!?!!!!!!!!!!

Bro, i think you're confusing the system partition with internal storage. My understanding is that if you download and install an app it takes space on the internal storage (2gb) not on the system partition. What do you need more space on the system partition for?

issue with data connection

I have followed this thread for sometime, and finally decided that root on 2.3 wasn't enough android for me, so I went ahead (since I already had cwm) and downloaded the CyanogenMod 10.1 stable, works great other then I can not get the data connection to work whatsoever.

I've tried:
Reflashing the ROM
Reflashing the ROM to one of the nightly builds
Flashing the different modems listed
Configuring the APN setting about a million times

This is a Straight Talk galaxy S2 sgh-959g

I would love to keep android 4.2
But if I can't get my data back up, I might have to go back to stock :(

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Use the stock APN. Put everything on exactly as it says in the op and it will work. If you still can't get it, upload some screenshots of your apn setup. Many have had the same problem and they have always had some error.
Also make sure you hit the menu soft key and save the apn settings before backing out to the apn selection screen.
