Hmmm the microphone should not be an issue. Exactly what kind mic troubles are you having?

As for upgrading to kitkat just read up on it and keep up with the threads you're interested in. When you're ready to make the jump just drop us a line in here and I or someone else can help you if you need it. Is really pretty easy.

It just flat doesn't work. I didn't think to test it before I flashed the phone, because I am an idiot & Gingerbread scared me ;) But I can make or take calls & hear what's being said, but my microphone doesn't pick anything up. Also having some weird little problems... the phone initially read my external SD card just fine, then after a reboot it kept saying the card was empty. It, within about a half hour, froze & reboot itself (rather quickly, not enough time for it to overheat, I don't think) when locked while an app was running, would reboot on wake.

Not only that but, while mr-cook's work has been invaluable during this, I don't like his rom that much... I think it's just being used to CM. But the tilt-navigation features & everything are nifty.

Do you know of any good step-by-step guides other than this one to get me to a current installation of CM? Not that this is complicated, I just feel like I botched it so badly to begin with, something a little more detailed might be what I need...

It'll have to wait until this evening to mess with in any case...

I'm totally open to upgrading to KitKat; I was just so burnt out, digging through software files that I sort-of understand, scared of bricking the phone.

Thanks,
~Adam

TWRP, CWM & some basic disambiguation

Hello all,

I'm trying to add to this very informative thread... a lot of the stuff here is quite technical, and there's not much by way of a glossery. I came by this article explaining what a custom recovery is, as well as breaking down the differences between TWRP, CWM, etc. It explains some basic concepts in which I was lacking.

Thought it might be of use to other n00bs as well... hope it's not OT for this thread.

Thanks,

Continuing mic troubles / mr-cook's Cooked ROM / KitKat

So, I'm still having the same issue with the mic... no idea how to even go about diagnosing it. It just doesn't work on calls. It's not an issue of muting it on accident or something. It DOES work when I'm on speakerphone...
Could there be a setting somewhere that I don't know about? Some research shows an icon when hearing aid mode is on (can't seem to find the setting for that though). I've seen advice regarding conflicting apps; this can't be the case unless it's a baked-in app, which I doubt. I tried a factory reset from the get-go, didn't fix it.

Mr. Cook's rom is growing on me. I do wish that the notifications bar was black (I left it transparent). Will changing this from the bootloader take the device back to zero, or just that setting?

One of my favorite things is that my battery life is AMAZING compared to what it was! Easily double! Would this be preserved if I updated to KitKat, or is this some voodoo that was Cooked up especially?

All advice appreciated... obviously, the mic thing is kind of urgent...

I think it should be added to the op and labeled " required reading for noobs "

Sounds like the kernel didn't flash. Are you selected "update kernel" from the aroma installer? If so, we can get that fixed no problem.

Kitkat battery life is good. Probably better than what you had but not AS good as you're going to see with cooked/AJK. That's why i suggested it for you. It's amazingly good stable, trustworthy ROM.

As for the status bar, just boot into recovery and run the aroma installer and select "mods". Then just select the mods you want. Then reboot. Profit.

I'm fairly certain that I updated the kernel. Do I just run it again and ensure that is selected? The kernel is included in the Cooked ROM, yes? Not a separate file?

And I'm liking the rom more & more... mr-cook was right, the interface is growing on me. Got to change a few things (the blinking indicator when charging is driving me ape) but I dig it so far. Do you know if it's compatible with Nova Launcher? I loaded that last night, but it seemed to introduce some problems... that said, I wasn't really thinking and had a bunch of stuff running at the time; that may have been a factor.

And I did try a factory reset, some people said fixed the mic issue, no luck.

Thanks again, razen_kain; if you're ever in N. GA, I owe you a pizza.

let's see if we can get that mic working first. Let me ask you this: when you boot into recovery do you see an option called kernel specific options?

Nope, just the standard CWM v6.0.2.7. IIRC, Aroma didn't run until I'd chosen to flash the Cooked ROM.

~well.rested
Yeah. That's the aroma installer that comes with mr-cook's ROM zip. What i mean is when you boot into recovery you'll see

- reboot system
- install zip
- ... (Some other options)
- kernel specific options

If there's no "kernel specific options" option, go to the op and download AJK cwm 6.0.2.7.zip.
MAKE SURE IT'S THE ZIP FILE.
Download it to your phone. Boot into recovery and flash the zip like you would any other. Navigate back to advanced/reboot recovery

After the recovery reboots you should see kernel specific options in the menu.

That's the first step

Running 3.10.0-R93-AJK_v4.9_NoSwap... ran permissions etc. per the AJK page... no change. Mic only works in speakerphone, have tried swapping noise reduction.

:banghead: ...hmmm... Are using any app that alters the sound or anything that might be associated with sound at all. There has to be something on your end that is keeping that mic from working because it works for everyone else and you've installed everything correctly.

Also open your stweaks app and scroll over to the sound tab and make sure that analog mic gain is not turned all the way down

Analog mic gain @ 0 dB....

Only app I installed was AirDroid to swap some files... checked Voice Recorder, the dB meter doesn't move, stays pinned at the low end... actually, it looks like it's vibrating very quickly at the low end...

Mic works in speakerphone. So it can't be a hardware problem...

Ok.... Humor before i recommend a full wipe. Go back to AJK thread and download the same kernel but get the mic swap version. Install that and see what happens

E:Can't open /sdcard/AJK_v4.9_MicSwap.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.

Going to re-download and try again...

How involved is this full wipe?
