Going to re-download and try again...

How involved is this full wipe?

~well.rested
Yeah that's a bad download. You know how to check the md5 sum?

Is there anything special or different wiping this phone/ROM vs. any other? Just don't want to kill the thing.

~well.rested
No. But try that mic swap version before you do that

md5 hashes pass. I suppose I'll go from a clean wipe... but I'll do it tomorrow; I've begun to associate a specific headache with this >.< Any particular guide you recommend? I think I can go through your posts and go step-by-step through the re-install... really, an update to the OP layout might be in order...

Go herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155992 and download mr-cook's ROM wipe.zip flash that in recovery and then repeat the install process for cooked 2.2.

You're absolutely sure that mic was working before?

Well, not absolutely... I did make a call before I rooted and flashed the phone, but it was just to an automated service, didnt occur to me to test the mic.

I can't imagine what else could be doing wrong; I seem to have a pretty unusual situation that has not been resolved thru usual means.

Suggestions on that wipe guide? Or a diagnostic tool for the mic?

What do you mean by wipe guide?

Edit: I have to agree with mr-cook (below). After thinking about it, this has got to be a hardware issue. There's a file in the op you can flash in Odin that will take you straight back to bone, unrooted, straight out of the box, stock.

The mic works on my ROM. I use it every day. Save yourself the headache and just flash back to stock, and see if the mic works. If it doesn't then take the phone back for an exchange.

But if it's a hardware problem, how could the mic work in speakerphone but not normal handset mode? I'm utterly embittered toward sending my phone for warranty service again; it was supposed to be back to me in 5 days, took them more than two weeks.

I'll try the stock ROM when I get home this evening; I run mr-cook's scripts just like I would anything else, yes?

Thanks,

I did want to thank you, @mr-cook, I wish I had stayed current on this forum since I used your guide to flash in May of last year. My sole quibble with the CM mod was the battery life; your Cooked ROM (aside from offering access to new features) easily doubles my battery and appears to be more stable & better with resources... it makes me wonder; if one guy can rebuild a ROM this well, why doesn't it ship that way in the first place?!?

I've got fingers & toes crossed that the mic problem is a software issue of some sort, perhaps related to my initial bad flash of ShoStock3 or something.

In any case, I owe you a sincere thanks for the Cooked ROM.

Ran the ROM WIPE & KERNEL CLEANER scripts. Flashed stock in CWM. :crying: Everything works except the mic :crying:. So it's a physical, hardware problem? Would flashing from Odin make any difference? Stock Kernel? I thought that was included in the stock ROM?

I just do NOT want to deal with StraightTalk customer service again...

Thanks again,

Nope. I'm afraid it's straight talk or speaker phone only conversations for you. That sucks man but on the plus side I've heard from others they send replacements pretty fast. Well at least you know what to do when you get it. Until then :)

Yes, they're supposed to send them pretty fast... they told me when I sent mine in (this one is a replacement) that I'd have it within five days... two weeks later I had to drive to a FedEx to pick it up myself, since they shipped to the wrong address... but, oh well.

And to be sure, I know exactly what I'll be doing when it does show up :D

Thanks all,

Battery Drain

I am running SHOstock-4.0 with the 3.0.31 JeBoo Kernel. I have had this ROM for a while and had a battery drain issue that I thought I solved by re flashing the ROM about a month ago, then I noticed that it was draining in about 8 hours under normal usage. Today I pulled the phone from the charger around 12 noon and only used it for about 15 minutes total all day, by 5:00p.m. I had only 23% battery life so I shut the phone off, when I turned it back on about an hour later the battery life was at 3% and I plugged it up. I know that this is not normal, GSam battery monitor is showing the Kernel using between 30-50% of the battery life with the monitor being around 25% nothing else stands out... any ideas ?

When you shut the phone off at 23% and rebooted to 3%, well that's the old Samsung battery bug biting you in the arse. To avoid this, plug the phone in before you reboot or only reboot if your >65%.

As stated above, bbs will be a big help. If you're not familiar with it, you need to "fix that about yourself". If a certain wakelock is killing you, you can Google it to death.

Also, it's good to wipe cache and dalvik every couple of weeks or so. As well as fix permissions if you install/uninstall apps frequently. I look at this like changing your oil in your car. It needs to be done once in a while.

If none of that helps, reflash jeebo's kernel. Worst case scenario, full wipe, format system and preload. Reflash SHOstock3. Mr-cook has some nice scripts for all of these things in the op (linked). Give him a thanks when you find them. They're quite convenient.

Dreaded noob here...

Had an SGH-S959G Straight Talk Galaxy S2 given to me. So far, I'm loving it. Great phone, miles better than the hunk of junk ZTE Merit I was using before.
However, the fact that it's stuck with 2.3.6 is a problem since some of the paid apps that I have (and some that I'd like to buy) are now updated to run on only 3 and up. The phone won't sync with Kies to do the update and Straight Talk has said they're not updating it.
All I want to do is to be able to upgrade my device to an up-to-date kernel, nothing "custom", just more current.
I've rooted a couple phones in the past, the previously mentioned ZTE Merit as well as an HTC Incredible - they were both straight forward processes and the guides that I found for them were simple step by step guides. It took me under 10 minutes with both devices thanks to great links and simple instructions. I'll be honest, the "updated" guide on the first page of this thread (which, based on skimming through some of the more recent replies on this thread might not be so updated anymore) is confusing the hell out of me and I really don't know what I'm looking for or where to find it. Could anyone provide me with a more straight forward step by step guide so that I could update this phone to a more recent kernel, preferably ICS or Jelly Bean?

Thanks!
