Ok devs i been doing some experimenting tonight with my other phone running cooks, one of these two things seem to have fixed the booting issue... after 5 reboots not one has bootlooped or gave me the lock screen freeze.. not sure what one i did rite though.. first thing was i forgot to put my sd card back into my phone.. so no sd card.. no problems.. also, i installed a app and changed the animated boot image.. always felt something suspect about that google one! One of these two things may have fixed the booting issue... but what one is more plausible? And it will be a known fix through out today if i have no issues.

my phone randomly crashes now and reboots on its on stuck at the google play screen :'(
I'm willing to do what ever to fix it.

edit: that message that was displayed was in yellow and said( POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE ) and red numbers at the top saying [RST_STAT = 0X20000000 ] it just happen to me again
I just figured out 'how' this error happens, just happend to me! I powered off my phone while still connect to usb cord to ac adapter, when i saw the big animiated battery meter come on i held power button to turn phone back on and then got the POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE! so i now know how this happens, all you gotta do is remove the power cord and it will start up normal. Unfortiantly i have no idea 'why' it happens, but it seems to think your usb cable is connected to download, not power.. and this explains why when your phone would power off at night you would see this error message assuming you had your usb cable attached.

On to the next one.

Update: even after reinstalling sd card and proforming 4 reboots while using the custom boot image, have had zero bootloops or lock screen freezes.. ussaly the first reboot would bootloop or freeze... is it possible it was the google image causing this? Seems far fetched but after all my phones have been through i say its possible.. once again will know forsure by end of the day today.

awesomeness! your rite! every time i had that darn error message my usb cable was attached, never happens with out it :silly: daah! wounder why it does that though.. could be something more to that... and for the boot-loops i really REALLY REALLY hope somebody can figure it out because it is really REALLY ignoring! you never know when its going to happen, it could load fine this time but next time give you some "BEEP" . how did you change your boot logo:confused: i want inn! and got my fingers crossed that we can figure this darn thing out. :highfive: yeah!

thanks hun, is this it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322046 or were can i download it at? and ain't that the one that already comes with cooks?
You can flash the stock i777ucmd8 kernel from the op in that thread. Mr-cook made one that is cwm flashable.

i didn't know you had to buy the moble oden app... is there another way? not feeling all that keen on spending money on something not guaranteed to work.

---------- Post added at 03:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 AM ----------

hmmm I actually have a very simple, but silly question... i was just reading the i777ucmd8 cooks forum when i noticed this Big ol word "MODEMS"!!! something sparked in my brain and i went on a new mission into my downloads folder just to see if i777 modems were downloaded by my boyfriend... and no they weren't. meaning my modems were not updated... no this may be again.. silly, but could that be the reason for my phone to be rebooting and getting stuck with bootloops?

even though my data is super fast, mobile and wifi, i still can't help but wounder... :silly:
You can go to settings >about phone>base band version and that will tell you which modem you're using. The modem is not capable of causing bootloops or reboots though. It only deals reception for mobile data and Wi-Fi signal

---------- Post added at 06:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:16 AM ----------

And FYI, THE BOOT ANIMATION IS NOT, I REPEAT NOT, causing any of your problems. Please, PLEASE PLEASE! Follow the recommendations laid out by @4-2ndtwin or stop posting in this thread! It is getting to the point of spam and I'm about ready to ask the mods to step in here.

OK. This has gone on long enough. After thousands of downloads of my ROM you and your accomplice are the only ones with this issue or that has ever had this issue. So the problem is the USER. This is not a spam all day every day thread. We are here to help. If you choose not to listen or take our advice please POST ELSEWHERE. You have been given everything you need to help you. If you can't take that for what it is, there is a search function on this forum. If you need any further assistance with your issue MAKE YOUR OWN THREAD IN Q&A so that maybe someone else can give you the answer you're looking for.

Please do not post about this issue here anymore. I'm sorry but obviously we can not give you what you're wanting.

Logcat information...

Hello (esp. to @mr-cook & @razen_kain! You guys put up with a lot of bull),

Y'all may remember me from a few months ago, with random lock/reboot/bootloop issues on my Cooked ROM. It was suggested that I debug the boot issue with Logcat, which I downloaded and ran, but it was all just so far over my head. Can anyone suggest a good resource for deciphering the info it gives me? I was not able to find much, anywhere.

I had a lock-up about a week ago, phone would simply not boot under any circumstance. I cleared the caches, fixed permissions, etc, nothing worked. Re-installed ROM, as well as the AJK NoSwap 4.9 kernel, restored my TiBackups, all was well... for about 20 minutes, then it locked up again.

I tried going down the CM road, but I have not been able to get any of the CM roms to load, though it's my impression that they should work with the AJK kernel.

I'm just looking for a stable phone... I'm concerned, as well, that it could be a hardware issue. I've been running bare-bones for the last few days, only the "essential" apps... hangouts, gmail, Netflix, Pixel Dungeon, but that's it. I had a suspicion that the issue could've been with Timely, which makes me sad as it's easily the best clock app I've used. It has only reset itself once in that time, though it did require me to pull the battery and then booted with no background or anything. Reboot has it back to normal.

I've skimmed through the posts since I was following this forum closely, and haven't really seen/heard anything...

Recap:

1) A good resource to use Logcat
2) Any ideas why CM won't install? Like Mr-Cook, I've come to like the TouchWiz, and I know that this ROM is better than CM in terms of battery life (and, I suspect, performance...) but it doesn't seem to want to stay stable on my phone...

Thanks!

1- For the logcat use one of the apps that color codes the log. Look for anything red your looking for a fatal error would be the big one, but 99% of the time it's never that easy. I'm not rea good with them either, I search through them and if I find anything that seems suspicious I Google it.
2- If it won't install ours likely due to the update script (it can be kind of picky). Remember don't wipe or format anything before the install as the updater script will be looking for information you just deleted.
2-1- If it just won't boot CM you'll need to search the Q&A section. I believe I've seen that issue before, but don't remember the solution to it.

Also for any that have issues you could try something as simple add changing the profile in Stweaks. I'm running the performance profile and haven't had any issues. Then again if I was having issues, I would have never released the ROM in the first place.

@well.rested, regarding cm issues; are you using AJK aosp version? Don't use mic swap or no swap. Also, did you try just running them with the stock kernel?

Regarding cooked, are you using zzmoove governor? If so, try on demand. It's been my experience that some of our phones don't like zzmoove for whatever reason
Zzmove caused havoc with my phone for sure. A lot of random reboots. I stay with on demand and everything is fine.

I've never understood the mic swap and what we are supposed to use. I use renders kernel because I understand its for our phone. So my question is what is the difference and not that I'm changing kernel but do we use swap or no swap?

The grave digger will be the last person in the world to "let you down in a tight spot."

Once again im not the only one with this issue, i guess all our phones are just defective yet work fine with other Roms.
And my accomplice lol was it getting to much heat for ya? Now theirs a 3erd person posting about these problems on cook. And we have not gotten a fix for this issue, were getting the run around, basicaly its use something else or get over it, but that means i got to give up, not something i do.
And i am not posting about irrelevent or inappropeiate content on this forum, everything posted on my behalf have been about the sgh-s959g, and cooksi777 Rom, not irrelevent, and definitely not spam, and as much as your tired of looking at it im twice that about writting it. But your rite this has gone on to long, my sympathy goes out to anyone else stuck with these problems running on cooks rom, there is just simply not a fix so get over it lol.
You aint gotta take this to the Mods cuz im done trying to fix something that already broken.
Big thanks to everybody that at least tryed to help, sorry for you inconvenience.

Gone.

This is just a reminder:

This thread is not here because the maintainer is responsible for the smooth operation of your phone. You are! It's implied in the first paragraph of this thread. Please go read it if you have not already.

It is not the thread for issues concerning Cooked ROM, SHOstock3, AJK kernel, Cm, Touch Wiz, or any other topic that is not specific to the Straight Talk SGH-S959G.

***If you're posting about these things and don't like what you hear, feel free to post in the appropriate thread (where they are also NOT obligated to help you)***

THAT BEING SAID, we still help as much as we can and understand the frustrations that can come about from running custom firmware on your phone. If you ask for help, and get a response you should:

A) say why you can/can't do that
or
B) do it and report the results.

This will let the helpers know you're actually trying the things they suggest AND help them help you narrow down your problem. You should not:

A) feel entitled to anything
or
B) keep posting the same problem over and over while suggesting your own solutions to the problem you need help with and ignore the ones offering help by not doing "A or B" in the "you should" section above.

Above all else PLEASE REMEMBER (and this goes for ALL of Xda) that people help you ONLY because they want to. It will help you immensely if you don't change that. This site was made to connect developers and their ideas. It is not the android customer service help desk. It's a living library of knowledge. You will be expected to search, read, learn AND listen. Approach it with this mindset and you will not be disappointed.

We use no swap for cooked and mic swap with SHOstock3. This is bc SHOstock3 is based off of i9100 which has the mic and speakerphone mics reverse from ours. So if you used mic swap on cooked you'd be using your speakerphone mic for regular phone calls and regular for speakerphone calls. Check the first few pages of the thread when we discovered it (cooked thread).

The aosp version of AJK is for cm, aosp, aokp, etc JB ROMs. If you're using mic/no swap for cm that's probably why it's not booting... Hopefully :)

Lol no. The only jb ROM I used was captivating but I never really understood which kernel to use. I had read it but what you said about i900 ROMs makes sense to me. But no I'm still on omni twrp with renders kernel. Thanks razen

Has anybody else had this issue on cooks, when coming from your call loggs or another similar destination, if you hit the message button it opens up a anonymous folder and wont let you send any messages?

Maybe you should post in the cooked ROM thread. This thread is for our phone in general and the people here dont all use cooked. You should post where the people use the ROM to get answers about a ROM. Just saying.

Hesitant to post this but think i owe cook as much as to let him know his rom is now working great on my gs2 ever since i changed the boot animation its been running smooth, Not sure how that fixed it but it fixed bootloops and lock screen freezes. And since i have choose to use his rom it just doesent feel rite leaving off where i did, If anybody else has had similar problems try what i did, cooksi777 is a great rom even with issues i still stayed with it even choose it over shostock3, i deeply appoligize for any negitive comments and any problems i created, u pepz are great and like what was stated by another user, "you sure do put up with a lot of B.S." and i know i gave a lot of it, and once again i am sorry for that. now i am moving on from this forum and hope to never have the need to use it again.
Thank you for this rom Mr.Cook and sorry i gave you hell about it.

Download Speeds

Had the phone (and Sho's killer ROM) for a couple of years with ATT. About 2 months ago switched to ST. Like the price. But my download speed is really slow. Whether I am on Long Island or in the city - I will get 4 bars but it takes way too long.

Download speeds last night near an open Central Park at 9:30pm - like 222kbps.
Long Island this morning 1.2 mbps.

My setup is in my signature. Here is the question:

Assuming the network is delivering higher speeds. How much impact does the SIM Card have - or is it just the radio in my dear S2?
