Hey razen, I just received an Alcatel One touch Sonic from Straight Talk. If this device is supported here at XDA can you point me in the right direction? Definitely not the GSII that I'm used to dealing with. Thanks for any assistance.

Sorry dude. I missed this somehow. Idk what to tell except Google it. If you find some information on it, maybe start a new q&a thread for it

Edit: i did a quick search on this and, man, the results look bleak.

I know. Was pointed to a website called chinaphonearena.com. Gonna surf thru that and if I find any thing useful I'll start a q&a thread here at XDA. Thanks for the reply's guys.

Not yet. Been busy trying to find another job. Sorry for the delay. Will let you know. Thank you for your interest in this.

Edit: Looks like Framaroot might work using the Gandalf exploit BUT I have not found any thing as far as a custom recovery. I know this is not the proper thread for this so where do you advise I should start a thread for this device?
Also Towelroot might work. Leary to proceed though without the recovery.

- ROMs
- I777 Main Thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1301 (Android Development, and Ported Development to find ROMs)

REMOVING THE YELLOW TRIANGLE

GINGERBREAD ONLY! (Root Required)
- Extract the stock zImage from the factory firmware at the top of this page (I used 7zip, and needed to extract it twice to get it apart).
- Put the stock zImage on the root (not in a folder) of your internal SD card. You can do this through the usb, adb push (adb push- Copy and paste the zImage into your folder with adb, connect your phone with usb, then command- adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage), whatever method you like.
- Now using adb shell, or terminal emulator found in the market (if you don't' have adb ask GOOGLE) issue the command (capitilazation and spacing matter):

$ adb shell
$ su
# dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

This must be done as #, if you have a $ enter command: su
You must already be rooted for this to work. To switch to a different kernel afterwards you can use the same method, or CWM without getting the yellow triangle again or increasing the flash counter. As long as you flash internally, if you use Odin or Heimdall to flash anything thats not stock it will come back.

REMOVING YELLOW TRIANGLE ICS AND ABOVE!
-If running ICS or above you can use triangle away found here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22462960

Let me know if this link gets killed and I'll add it to Dev host.

Flashing other versions of CWM with adb (Root Required)
- Extract the zImage (boot.img) from the ROM of your choice (I use 7zip to extract it).
- Put the zImage (boot.img) on the root (not in a folder) of your internal SD card. You can do this through the usb, adb push (adb push- Copy and paste the zImage into your folder with adb, connect your phone with usb, then command- adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage), whatever method you like.
- Now using adb shell (if you don't' have adb ask GOOGLE) issue the command (capitilazation and spacing matter):

$ adb shell
$ su
# dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6

or if it's a boot.img

# dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6

If you don't have service after unlocking and switching SIM cards you need to flash an at&t modem like I777UCLL6 found above. Apparently the modem used by Straight Talk only works with their service.

Mr Cook,

I'm new to android rooting but have jail broke a few iPhones. I understand a fair amount about software but not much about andriod. I have a Straight Talk SGH-S959G running fully stock android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.UDLG1 with Kernel v 2.6.35.7.

I would like to update 2.3.6 OS to ICS or Jellybean but I'm not sure what process to take. I'm also not familiar with all the abbreviations that are on this site and I'm not sure what ROMS, ODIN or Cryogen to use. I really don't need any custom ROMS. I would like to simply update to a better version of Android.

Could you give me an up to date, step by step?

THANKS!

Triumph, if you follow the very first set of instructions step by step you shouldn't have a problem. If you want to use Cyanogen, 10.2 is Android 4.3. You do need a custom rom for this phone as StraightTalk does not push OS updates to their devices.
My best advice would be to read and read some more. All your questions are answered here in this thread.

Everything you need is in op. Follow it step by step is the key. If after reading op your not comfortable I would advise you not to do it unless you have backup phone to use while you work it out. Don't fight it if it goes wrong use Odin to get back to start. That being said I am far from the sharpest tack in the drawer but was able to do it so if you can jail break iPhone you should be able to do this. Follow instructions to the T and you will be OK.

A grave digger will be the last person in the world to let you down in a tight spot.

Thanks Ninja! so cyanogen 10.2 is a rom? The entire thing is really tripping me out.

I have a HTC one x BYOP straight talk. The camera went out on it 4 weeks ago. I got extremely lucky and found a HTC One x with a broken screen on Craigslist $20 and just swapped screens, updated factory stuff and back to normal.

My wife has an old S959G Straight Talk GS2 with factory everything. At this point it's lagging running factory OS. I would love to update it but the thought of bricking it is a bit scary. I know I can root and install the rom. With everything all together in one thread It's hard to understand.

:) Yes it's a rom. Please do some reading before you actually do any thing. We don't want you bricking your wifes device. Not to be an a.. but since you didn't know CM is a rom you def need to do some reading.

THanks and will do !!
Basically all you need to do if you're upgrading to a custom ROM is just use Odin to flash a cwm recovery, boot into that recovery, make a backup of your stock setup, then flash the custom ROM. All custom ROMs around here are already rooted so going through the root process is not necessary. That's only if you're going to stay stock 2.3.6 gingerbread with root access.

Use any of the cwm 6.0.2.7 versions from the op and remember .tar files are for Odin. Zip files you flash in recovery.

Edit: why JB? You can have kitkat....

Yalz jumped on me for reporting issues i was havin with cooks rom on my s.t. gs2 tryna tell me this thread is only for the galaxy s2 from s.t. and not for problems with cooks rom, but yet i keep recieving updates from this thread almost everyday now about completly diffrent phones! This is gettin crazy open ya own thread or take it somewhere else, not fair for people who actually have a s.t. gs2.

Uh i think you need to reread. It's pretty clear we are indeed talking about the s959g and even if we're not that's our choice. If someone is nice and polite they will probably get help. If they are rude and ignore everyone's advice they will be asked to move along as it was in your case. Good to know you're still lurking around waiting to pounce on injustice. Keep acting like that and the entire Xda community will ignore you, not just this little clique.

It's a different story when people actually ask and need help compared to being a buffoon and causing themselves numerous problems and then whining about them and blaming others and then suddenly fix things by doing something that will NOT affect the way ANY system runs. Sure wish I could do nothing and contribute to post count and yet somehow remain smug about it....
