Thanks for the try! No joy - same result as last time. Installing Shift-JB doesn't have any effect on the recovery (tried to install from CWM/PhilZ/TWRP) - just bricks the OS. Is the OS kernel separate from the recovery kernel or do they both use the same?

I would try it with CM 10.2 for you but the nightly build boot-loops on the phone (without even installing Shift).
Well I don't know why it doesn't change your recovery. That makes zero sense. The kernel and recovery is the same thing

That's correct. There's literally just no way I can foresee it not changing your recovery. @mr-cook, you ever heard of this?

/data and /storage/sdcard0 are not mounted (since they're encrypted) - this interrupts backups and restores but shouldn't interrupt just a kernel flash right?

No should have zero effect. Kernel and recovery are on a separate partition. I'm baffled honestly. I can't think of one scenario this or even my kk kernel doesn't change your recovery

I have never heard of this in my 2 years of owning the I777 and the 959G.

I've had just bum downloads mess things up, but never had a problem with my recovery version not changing.

Is back-to-stock and starting over an option in this case? Sounds like Odin may be needed.

I can try to Odin in the kernel if you like - just need a .tar.md5
Use Odin to install original factory firmware (stock sgh-s959g .tar file)
Then reboot to full stock phone. Don't worry about seeing it up. Boot back in to download mode and flash one of the recoveries in Odin. Boot into that recovery and flash the Rom you want. Just be sure if it's a kitkat Rom you must use cwm 6.0.4.5 or even better just use twrp.

I've done this several times myself takes about twenty minutes to go from soft brick to bone stock then flash recovery, install Rom, restore backup. Profit.

I'm currently on CM 10.1.3 with internal storage encryption, UCMD8 modem, and TWRP 2.7.1.0. Works totally fine. I have no problem flashing any recovery or ROM - main issue is (as above) when I try to flash the Shift kernel, it doesn't over-write the existing recovery (regardless of the recovery I use to flash it). However, I don't ever have a problem flashing alternate recoveries - going from CWM to TWRP to PhilZ is easy.

has anyone found a pit file for our phone that increases system size so we can install the full gapps again? found one for the i777 but not sure if it would work I do not want to loose our separate partition for recovery.

Try extracting shift recovery.img from the zip and stick it in Mr cooks recovery zips. Just be sure to name it whatever mr-cook had his named. I've done it before with a twrp recovery

Here is a link to a stock pit file. I read a post about self edit and install, which is not for the faint of heart. So for I can't find it again. If I do I'll post a link.

I figured it out. Took a look at your updater-script. Seems like you were flashing mmcblk0p5 (KERNEL). The next line would of flashed mmcblk0p6 (RECOVERY) but you had it commented out. Sooo - I uncommented it and got the PhilZ recovery up. The new kernel still soft-bricks CM 10.1.3 (verified this by removing everything from the script that didn't flash Kernel or Recovery partitions). Though the PhilZ recovery does come up, it doesn't recognize the encrypted /data (/sdcard or /storage/sdcard0) partition and doesn't prompt for password entry.

Oh well, at least this is a learning experience in android partitioning for me :)

I must have missed that somehow I have read almost every page of this forum again today plus countless others since 8am
I tried the code on this post (root) and it put out a .pit file. Use pit magic and compare it to mr-cooks post. I've got to get some sleep or I would try it. On call for 48 hour starting saturday 8 am. Best of luck.

See my last post (did it the hard way :p). I went ahead and repackaged it (and attached) for anyone looking for an updated PhilZ recovery for this device. This a recovery ONLY - does not alter the kernel (and thus should not brick the device) Tested on my SGH-S959G.

@mr-cook - can you add this to your first post? Would probably be useful to some folks.
