OK I used ODIN to flash the phone stock again but it is still stuck in the loop. I also can not get the phone into recovery mode, only ODIN mode is accessible. When flashing the phone it took a few attempts before I got a pass. I am wondering what is causing the loop and how to access the files, the absence of recovery mode is a bit odd also. During one of the failed instal attempts the phone did prompt me to use recovery mode but the phone still went into ODIN.
Did you try (after flashing the stock firmware through Odin) to flash the stock recovery back to it as well?

I'm also wondering, since you could not get into recovery before this, if not having the ability to format the preload partition is having something to do with it. Someone a bit wiser than me would have to chime in on that speculation though.

OK. The first time you flashed CWM was it something from this thread, or somewhere else? I would think you're in boot loop from flashing the wrong thing.

Regardless of anything else if you initially flashed CWM from this thread you would be about to get into recovery. Trust me I done horrible things to this phone, and never had a situation where I couldn't Odin back CWM and recover.

no recovery

Hey everyone. My friend has GS2 strait talk version, and was wanting to use it on a different carrier. He asked me what it would take and i just gave him a basic run through of what all would be needed. Well now he has went and messed up his recovery. It go into download mode but not recovery at all. I had him try several things will chatting with him in IM. He used some One click root to root it. I has root but doesn't have a recovery now. Can you just flash a recovery while booted into the rom. I know with my old Nexus I could with CWM. He tried flashing the odin file on the OP but every time It would fail the ID com would be yellow then after hitting start it would say Cant open the serial(COM) Port. Any Ideas other that trying a full restore to stock?

Sounds like he needs to try a different USB cable. I've seen this before in here many times and have experienced it myself. Some cords will charge and even transfer data but for some reason won't work with Odin. Try and get a cord that came with a phone ( any phone). They are usually "full feature" cords. I used one from a kindle fire for mine for ages.

As for root, I do believe framaroot is the way they go now with this device unless you flash a custom ROM which comes rooted by default but you can't do that until you get the custom recovery there.

It has root working on it. Just no recovery of any kind that he could get it to boot into. He said he tried different cables but I have a couple of factory cables I will try when I get it. Thanks

If it has root just use mobile Odin to flash I custom kernel
If I use mobile Odin will flashing the SGH-s959G_TWRP-v2.7.1.0.tar.md5 file on the OP fix everything and does that include the kernel or would i need something else? Also does the kernel contain the recovery? I would real like to get the recovery working and make a back up before doing to much. you never know when something could go wrong.

Kernel and recovery are stored on separate partitions on this phone and (from what I'm able to tell) have no effect on each other. IE. you can start the recovery with a bricked kernel partition. I believe that version of TWRP contains recovery ONLY and does not come with a kernel (some recoveries simultaneously install a separate kernel). This assumption is based off of the TWRPv2.7.1.0.zip (I haven't examined the tar.md5 Odin version).

Flashing SGH-s959G_TWRP-v2.7.1.0.tar.md5 with mobile Odin should allow you to boot into TWRP recovery without issue.

Found the best rom for s.t. Gs2!

Its been a while since i posted on this thread, but i want to share my findings with others that are still in the S.T. GS2 family looking for a truly stable, dependable Jelly bean 4.1.2 Rom. Some of you pepz up here probably remember me as the A-hole having multiple issues with cooks rom, such as start-up screen freezes, boot-loops, multiple malfunctioning USB issues, and the most recent i never posted about was the phone putting itself in encryption mode asking for a P.W. i never setup, and even though i was able to fix it VIA recovery, enough was enough wit dat ****! I had to leave cooksi777 rom, and i'm sitting here today knowing there are some serious bugs in that Rom even though others on this thread disagreed and blamed the issues on me! i am a professional at all this today, and it is actually pretty hard to f**k up if you know what your doing! the evidence supports my claims about that Rom, it was D only one i had those specific issues with! yes' cook had the rite idea and his efforts are acknowledged , i still highly recommend not using it since these issues were never addressed or fixed properly!
((Good news!!)) since then i have tried multiple Roms; ShoStock3, cm11, pacman, and a couple kitkat roms that were "ok" but still not perfect or what i was looking for... but then i found NeatRomV6.4. for the i9100, and yes it ain't even for the i777 but trust me when i say THIS. IS. THE. BEST! this rom is EASILY CONVERTED for the sgh-i777 or sgh-s959g by simply flashing the Jeboo kernel after flashing the Rom, and then flashing any i777 modem. 1-8, has ya gaps pre-installed. I have Been running NeatRom for a little over a month with absolutely ZERO!!! problems on my sgh-i777 ~AKA~ sgh-s959g! super fast, smooth, stable, very dependable everything working except NFC for the simple fact i9100's don't support NFC, but everything else is supported including Multi-Window, its a very nice stock rom with camera working flawlessly, can even record video while on call, (not seen with other roms) comes with Aroma installer can choose S5 toggles or stock 10t, has a lot of customization's such as colors for status bar, notification panel, signal icons, a hole list of different battery animations, has a NeatRomControll so can have scrolling wallpaper, full home screen rotation, logg call buttons and contact photos ON/OFF, and so many other benefits i can't type them all here, but you get the works! & i see the question asked way to much on this thread (WHAT IS THE BEST ROM FOR THIS PHONE) And now you have a answer. NEATROMv6.4 GO GET!
hope this post can help some pepz out.

Idk about neatrom never used it but I have had mr. Cooks rom running for over a YEAR with NO issues, it's never done any of the things you listed. So to come in probably the best place there is for help with the 959 and bash 1 of the best roms there is for this turd of a phone I feel is uncalled for.

I have two GS2 phones and had both running cooks, both phones had the exact same issues! the most severe was not being able to power on the phone while usb charger was connected, would send phone into a (unknown power mode) i have no explanation for how both my phones showed issues while yours did not... i did read a few other post that had the same issues as me; maybe it was the kernel, either way that's the kernel included with cooks rom and i take it you were running the AJK kernel as well? anyway NeatRom turned out to be a very solid rom, has everything cooks rom has PLUS A LOT MORE, and without the issues i was having, such a good ROM i wanted to share with others.

I think the common recurring issue is pretty clear. Funny how you "fixed" things by doing stuff that literally affects NOTHING except what you're changing. Even funnier how you think that the "pepz" here, as you previously stated, give even a split second of rational thought to anything you have to say or a thought you struggle to muster up. Hopefully it is a great rom, maybe just stay there and bother them with your nonsense the next time you can't turn the phone on and it's because the Roswell aliens changed your baseband and switched you to Verizon network

I'm not going to debate roms with you here, this is a place to help people not confuse them. You seem to be the only person to EVER have the issues you claim. So until someone else has that problem your "help" is basically useless. You should also be very thankful for everything Mr. Cook has done because if it wasn't for him you may not even be able to have your s2 where it is today so you can complain. You state you have no idea why it did what it did so you obviously don't know what your doing nor how to fix it which gives you no right to complain. Each developer clearly states on each OP there not responsible for what happens to your phone when you root/flash anything. So can we please put all this behind us and get back to the nice calm thread this used to be. /rant

Ya I picked this up awhile back it's definitely years ahead of the s2. But I still mess around with the s2 it was and still is a good phone. It might not have the newest android and be the fastest but it's still capable of alot.
