I am hoping that you can help...I have the s2 sgh-s959g from straight talk, and I have been trying to use this forum to update (I know I'm probably a couple years late to this)...I can't seem to be able to get around the stock recovery (e3?)...I have tried flashing cwm and twrp using odin...but nothing sticks to the phone (odin goes "green" and says it was successful...but when I try to boot into recovery I get the same old stock recovery)...

I have tried to place update rom with cwm recovery on the root of the external SD, but when I try that option with the stock recovery...it can't find any of the files. Are there any simple directions on how to do this? How do I find the root of the external SD? Do I unzip the files I download before placing on the external SD (assuming where I have tried to put them is actually the right place)

I'm still running gingerbread, and If I can't update to jelly bean (or something newer) I'm going to have to ditch this phone....Any help would be appreciated.
Hmmm... I've never heard of this happening. I've seen Odin not work but never give a false successful flash.

The root of your SD card just means put it on your SD card without putting it in any other folder. What are you putting there?

4 years for a thread is like 86 years in human years. Those phones are museum pieces now.
It was a phenomenal phone. Still have it in a drawer. Took that sucker from GB to lollipop! Thanks to all the fantastic devs and contributors we had... Those were the good old days. Flashing was easy then. This m8 with its 9,766 partitions is a bit more nerve wracking.

You should have gone Nexus, brother. Flashing is easy peasy. But no, you had to have your M8...

How is a Nexus? I'm thinking in a year or so to try that next or go back to a Samsung 8 or 9 whatever there is in another year or so. Currently on 1+1 its an OK phone not happy with camera really.
I've been on the N5 since release, and have absolutely loved it. Going to keep it (like my i777) until it no longer works. After that, I have no intention of ever getting anything other than a Nexus, basically because of the development community and the near-impossibility of bricking it. I mean, you really have to go way out of your way to brick one of those things.

BOY! You are right about that! My next phone will be for sure.
But I will say this about HTC. When it's running right, it is a damn buttery smooth high powered beast

Edit: and btw where are you on my WWF list? ?

alright so i have a tracfone sgh-s959G someone gave me recently. Its currently running rooted UCKH7, but it doesn't have a custom recovery installed. I have tried flashing kernal with custom recovery through odin and adb, but it always just boots into stock recovery. So, I am trying to get it back to stock so that i can install a custom recovery and reroot it using Mr. Cooks method. I'm doing this all with the hopes of then being able to remove the Network lock so i can use my ATT Sim card with it. When i try to install the factory firmware file (Stock-SGH-S959G.tar.md5) in odin, it fails when it gets to the installing recovery part. What am i doing wrong? Anyway, I have thoroughly confused myself because i have been reading through these forums a lot for the past few days not wanting to ask a stupid question. Any help would be appreciated

I don't think you need to go back to stock. Just grab the Odin flashable recovery from the first page. I believe it's under "how to install a custom ROM/recovery" the first file is
sgh-s959gTwrp2.7.1.0.tar.md5 (something like that anyways)
Follow the instructions for using Odin and this will just flash recovery partition and give you twrp 2.7.1.0 recovery. You don't need to go back to bone stock.

The thing is, with the straight talk version of this phone, kernel and recovery are on separate partitions. That's why flashing a kernel is not changing your recovery.

If you're still having Odin fail to flash the recovery partition it is most likely your USB cable. Not all of them work. Try a different one.

I flashed the UCKH7 rooted file and everything works with that but still on stock recovery. So, I tried switching the usb cable and the twrp Odin file still failed. It says firmware encountered a problem connect to kies. So I reflashed and am back to UCKH7. Not sure what to do now. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I guarantee to you it's the cable. I've had the same problem myself. Had a cord that would transfer files but would NOT work with Odin. I had broken the original cord. Finally tried using the cord from my Kindle fire and worked perfectly.

But I am able to use Odin to flash the uckh7 or a different kernal just can't flash any recovery files or different roms. I have tried 4 different Cables now. I am also trying to change the modem and any modem.bin file that I flash fails also except for the one I'm currntky on which is S959GUDLG1.

Its been a long time since I have had to do any of this on this phone and have forgotten it all except I know the op has it all but it seems one of the files never worked for me but the other did don't remember which. Ray (razincain) and Mr cook are masters with this phone. But the 1st post has everything.

Have you checked the MD5 sum to make sure it's a match?

No the md5 check passes. So, I was trying ultimately to be able to use my att sim card with this tracfone. I thought I could accomplish that by unlocking the network lock and then changingthe modem. Apparently, that isn't going to work out from what I've been reading. So, here's my next question, what if I but an i777 motherboard off of ebay (around $30) and switch it out in this phone? You think that is the only difference and I'd be able to use it then. Probably not, huh?

Not sure. That's beyond my experience with this phone. However, if you have an at&t sim just take it up to at&t and have them set it up for you. I asked them before about mine and they said they could, no problem.

So I have an att contract sim card. From what I've read online you can't use any other sim with a tracfone unless tracfone unlocks it. I unlocked the network and sp lock using a free app but i still can't select a network operator its greyed out. I can edit the apn settings but it still says "not registered on network" when I try to make a call.
