I bought the tablet on Tuesday. I told myself that since it's nearly an AOSP, I'd at least give it a couple of days. Well, unlocked and rooted last night. Not being able to restore all my apps was the deal breaker, it was a pain to wait for the play store to download everything when titanium could finish in about a half hour (around 250 apps).

It really is killing me...

That I haven't unlocked this thing yet, but I bought it a week ago.

The things that are making me reluctant:

1. Warranty: I've got a year on this puppy unless I do this.
2. Bricks: So many reports of bricks on this device. I worked with devs on my phone and risked bricking it, but I knew if all else failed, Verizon reps weren't that knowledgeable. I'd be curious to find out if people are just doing business as usual and bricking it? I've been under the impression from previous devices that as long as you have CWR or TWRP you're in the clear, but with this device, the number of people bricked makes me wonder.
3. Diversity: So many different kernels, it could make your head spin. Hard to follow what the right course of action is.
4. Functionality: I don't want stuff to break. Trust me, with my phones and Nooks over the past 5 years, I've had enough of that. ROMs tend to introduce non-existent problems into the mix (i.e. Camera not working, Google Now not working, freezes, etc.).

Things that make me so antsy I just want to do it NOW:

1. CleanROM: It sounds positively awesome.
2. Wireless PS3 controller: This makes me giddy.
3. Outperforming a Prime? Oh yeah.
4. No more slow downs during data operations: ASUS should take note.

It's absolutely killing me. I purchased mine during black Friday for $275, and I know I'm not going to get that deal again, so if I brick it, I'm SOL. That's what's holding me back.

Ok, to make you a bit more confident: number 1, ok - you usually don't have hardware problems in the first year that Asus would repair, so this isn't really a problem...
number 2: Well, there's NVFlash what should make devices Brickproof but many ppl don't get how to use it and type wrong commands etc and then freak up and make a post with HEEELP - I personally didn't use NVFlash because I was on JB there and it isn't working on JB - I made a "HELP I'M BRICKED THREAD" when I was new here because of the buugy CWM... - these are just the 2 things that are nearly 95% of the "HELP I'M BRICKED" threads about with NO bricks ;)
3: I think, that's awesome, not a problem :D - You can have many different ROMs, based on Stock and AOSP and afaik you can only end up in a bootloop as far as you flash a device proper kernel...
4: Well, then you have to wait for stable releases - make a ROM (especially AOSP based) with 100% functionality like stock is really, really hard, because you need the proper lib's etc., but the main functions like GNow and Camera etc. should be on every ROM I see in the Development thread

So as you can see I did unlock my bootloader and I'm really happy with it - just don't panic if you have a little mess up like bootloader - search the threads of ROM you flashed and if this doesn't help ask there - you will get an answer if you do this, as you aren't new on XDA I think you won't just write "Help, I got bootloop on this ROM, what to do?" ;)

Only advice I can give you now anymore is TWRP 2.2.2 - I'm on this recovery since I got problems with CWM and it didn't give me any flashing problems at all, I got back from v2.3.1 because some ppl spoke of flashing issues, but I didn't get any...)

Alright, thanks... I think I'm going to do it. I'll keep an eye out for TWRP 2.2.2. Time to hit the boards. Finding the unlocker is easy, flashing roms should be easy, just need to get the flashing recovery right. I've done all this stuff a million times on other devices, so I've got that going for me :)

OK, done. Wow, no really, WOW. I nearly pooed myself because I flashed a bad recovery without realizing it. Managed to fix that though :D

FYI the JB blob over at the TWRP website was 5kb in size.

I've had this tablet since june or july and was fairly disappointed in its performance. I was going to wait for the warranty to run out before unlocking, but figured theres no chance of osmething going wrong in the warranty period if i'm not gonna be using it. So with that I decided to unlock the device and install cleanrom inheritance. WOW. NIGHT AND DAY. This is now the tablet that i wanted when i got it in the first place. To anyone on the fence, I'd jump on over. The grass is GREEN GREEN GREEN over here

LOL!! I nearly spit soda all over my keyboard when I read this. :p

There really is a HUGE difference between stock and a rooted custom ROM. I too had problems with recovery. CWM just wouldn't work right for me so I ended up installing TWRP. Best move I made besides a rooted custom ROM. I can honestly say that this little tablet has surprised the heck out of me too. I'm glad a didn't listen to my buddies who own the Nexus 7 and buy one of those. I'm getting the dock tomorrow. Just another reason to love my TF300T. :D

other than the cosmetic changes, what are the advantages you find in unlocking and using a different rom?
Is the speed improvement very significative, like twice as fast?
What else?

Mine is still locked and i don't think i'll be unlocking it before the warranty period ends (2 years). Main reasons are:

-i don't think the hardware is that durable, the power jack seems flimsy, the power button also doesn't seem as sensitive as before and i've noticed touch screen glitches a couple of times (quite far appart tho).

-i think i'll probably find a better tablet in less than 2 years and will switch. This one will have a better resale value if it's still under warranty.

Definitely unlocked and rooted. Always do on all my devices, it's great fun flashing different roms and seeing the differences between them, it's like having a whole new device each time. Also the performance enhancements are incredible, coming from a different device I was less than happy with the performance on my TF300T but after installing custom ROMs it's a whole different ball game.

Started flashing on my SGS2 and since then it's clear for me that I install Custom ROMs and don't use stock crap - although TF300 stock is way better than S2 TW crap...

Just bad that you can't reset flash counter (which would be re-lock bootloader), but as I had never problems with Asus (ok, I had to bring my Asus laptop to warranty 5 times lol) I just hope not to brick something :D
