I have installed substratum along with the addon and also I have the swift black Theme installed. A user on reddit reported it working fine . However the app doesnt apply the theme to drop down menu and system settings . I have it set on other(experimental) android version . Should I choose android 8 pixel/nexus to see if it works ?

Yeah, you should use the pure 8.0 one, the stock Motorola rom is close to AOSP in the UI department, Swift Black should completely apply.
You will have to reboot every time after crafting the overlays and only then do you enable them.

I re applied the patch with the experimental setting again a couple of times and it applied the theme to the system without me checking the box for it don't know how though. When I tried the nexus setting it didn't theme any app . How do you go with the process? Build & enable and then restarting or something else?

On stock Oreo, I chose the "8.0-Nexus or Pixel", built the overlays, rebooted and enabled them. As simple as that.

Everything is working for me.
Every time Swift Black gets updated from the Play Store, you need to Install and Enable the overlays and reboot.
And when Whatsapp gets updated, Swift Black follows with an overlay for it within a day or two.

So you never had a problem with WhatsApp after updating?
so if I want to update whatsapp, for example, I have to delete old swift black theme lays then restart the phone and install again?
i think i should never update whatsApp to keep it working with black theme.
if you don't update app's will it force you? force mean's app won't work until updated?

On stock 8.0 you have to just install the new overlay ( the one for the newer Whatsapp version ), reboot and enable it in Substratum.

This part is optional:
after that's done and Whatsapp is themed and working, go into the Substratum Installed Overlay list and remove the Whatsapp overlay for the older version ( don't touch the newer overlay ) if there are actually 2 different overlays.

It is just me or there is more battery consumption when there is a theme active then when it's not.....even with the Swift black???

It's just you. My SOT has increased since I started using the theme. I didn't calculate specifically, but the phone had more juice left after a day of regular use.
