Just got a new 7t and was surprised to find there is not much free storage space free due to the fact the system storage consumes 27gb !

So I only have around 92gb free after installing a few apps.

Crazy big :(

By default any storage will provide you 10% less i.e 13gb gone initially, the rest roughly 5-7 gb was used to be taken by system around the time of android 6, as time proceded and storage limitations reduced, some buffer is kept in the system storage if, just, incase for future proofness.

Hi thanks for the reply, I kind of understand that it’s just that I have a oneplus 5t as well with the latest Android 9 software, it also has 128gb capacity but i have more free space as the system storage is only 6gb. So that a huge difference between 6 and 27gb.

I realise it’s android 9 vs android 10, maybe it’s also 32bit vs 64bit, I’m not sure really.

Also I think the system keeps a backup copy of current system partitions for OTA? That might have something to do with it.

Can we empty up some system space?
Its 28 gb on my phone
I have 256GB version and system files are taking 28 gb of that. its just too much
I agree, I got the 256GB and also noticed that it takes up 28GB.
My previous OP6 had "only" 10GB System. (9.5GB to be precise). I still found that a bit too much but, meh, not worth the hassle.

But this time 28GB IS TOO MUCH.

Also I think the system keeps a backup copy of current system partitions for OTA? That might have something to do with it.
Yeah OP has A/B Partitions, so you have like a backup system.

But the System OTA zip is 2.5 GB. So are there over 10 Copies of old Systems ?!
(And LOS Androids are around 400-800 MB).
So it's just crazy.

Not that I'm running out of storage soon, but that's just abou the principle.
I wont accept that some Android OS reserves 28GB for itself.
I can have dual boot Windows and Linux on my computer on that storage space ...

Has this ever been resolved / answered? I've recently got my 7t and was amazed that i'd lost 27GB before I'd started!

See here for more details. The reason is that the system_a and system_b do not really exist, they are contained within the super partition on the 7t. It's the maximum space to be allocated instead. The system_a partition is in fact only ~ 2.2 gb large.

I’m having the same issue. I got my 7t from AliExpress. Originally I thought the size was because my 7t was the CN version but has the global software installed on it. Where did everyone else buy their phones? Maybe it’s a correlation

It's Android 10, see couple replies above you.

Mine is 30gb system storage what kinda joke is that.
It's still a pretty bad joke and it continues, though OP is not the only one.
It's due to Android's AB system and while I like it, it seems the way Google has implemented it, is pretty wasteful ...
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3561890/why-64gb-isnt-enough-space-for-android-phones-anymore.html

But like I said somewhere earlier too, it's even bigger than Windoze, and Windoze folder (including with all its drivers) is already bloated to 20GB ...
Also I mean, I hate Apple (esp. due to their anti repair policies, see Rossmann videos for Details) but at least they manage to keep their OS/System stuff under 7GB or so ...

And looking at reddit posts, not all variants? have that problem ... super weird.

On OP they discuss it for several pages, but no solution.

So is there really no way to just shrink that dumb partition to a more sensible size ?
