TA-1003 > TA-1000 for purpose of removing gapps, GMS ... crazy?

I've become less and less enamoured with google these days and want to try going google free on Android. TA-1003 works ok with play services disabled, but of course there are endless notifications saying XYZ app will not work without play services. Add to that, some functions like basically all the sensors, stop working with play services disabled. So I thought, hey, why not convert the phone to TA-1000 which afaik has no GMS like google play, etc. Problem solved? Dumb idea? Phone is currently upgraded to Pie with all security updates.
