Should I not use them?
Personally I think the phone works way better with them

:sigh: its common knowledge that using task killers are counterproductive to how android manages memory...this *isnt* a windows computer you are using but a linux based os

*if* you are rooted and know what you are doing..changing the minifree settings with autokiller or minifreemanager can help...but most people just pick a preset and make things worse

You remind me of a friend who insists task killers are wonderful. :) Android's memory management system is more than capable of doing what Task killers do, and more.

Here we go again with the task killers... if you like them, use them, especially if your phone seems faster, isnt that the name of the game? They DONT hurt your phone, nobody can say they do. Android may not need a task killer theoretically, but its not hurting anything to use them.

actually they re hurting your battery life...because you are constantly killing off processes that are then being restarted by android when they would have just been available to the system in the background but not actually being used

theres nothing more sad than seeing screenshots full of the atk icon in the status bar...

I LOVE the atk icon!! And battery life is horrible on eb01 whether you use a task killer or not.

Gotta say, I removed ATK from my rooted Fascinate running SC2.8 & I didn't really see a difference in performance or battery life one way or the other. I did this after reading many posts about how it is unnecessary and may, in fact, be counter productive - especially with battery life.

However, on my wife's completely stock Fascinate, I removed it and she was begging me to put it back a week later. The phone was laggy, and the longer it was on, the worse it got. Rebooting would "fix", but performance would decline over time. (Why I didn't abide my own rule about leaving my wife's device alone unless she has a complaint or request, I don't know. Hope I learned my lesson this time! :)

Android does a lot of things really well, but I don't think its memory management is absolutely beyond reproach - especially when bogged down with carrier bloatware.

My two cents is to try your phone with and without it and make your decision based on your own observations. YMMV depending on ROM and countless other factors.

I use the built-in one when necessary, but... not necessary, just close your effing programs. Not hard.

+1 I've tried with and without ATK, I've re-installed for better memory management.

Not a fan of atk. It likes to kill things I don't really want killed (such as my alarm clock) and maintaining the ignore list becomes a full time job.

I do notice that the phone gets stuttery at around 280mb of RAM being used, and that's when I use the built in task killer to kill an app or two that are really hogging memory. Some games just don't close when you use the back button to exit. But constantly killing every task like a lot of people do is stupid. Android handles memory very well.

I have two apps running: ADW and XDA, obviously. I press back. XDA closes. I open Tweetdeck, read my tweets, then close it BY PRESSING BACK.

I have never had a problem EXCEPT with stock browser, but I switched to my lovable xScope.

The stock browser is one thing I always kill. It won't exit without a lot of back button presses, and it uses 70+mb of RAM.

No prob on my phone, battery is a little better, im on sc 2.9 voodoo. Although i took it off my wifes droidx because she was having problems with it rebooting on its own qnd other weird stuff was going on. After i removed it she said her battery life is a lot better and programs dont close on their own anymore.

I will preface what I'm about to say with this. I sell phones for a living. Lots of phones. Thusly, I see lots of phones, in all states of repair, from LOTS of customers. When someone complains that something on their phone isn't working the first question I ask/thing I look for is ATK or something of that sort. Task killers demolish the delicate little ecosystem that is formed between all of the apps in a system. When you load a new media file half a dozen apps pop up to catalog it for reference. Task killers break all of the little connections between apps and the kernel and the rom. To fix many of these problems you'll need to reboot your phone. A lot.

Thing's I've proved empirically that a task killer has broken include
-bluetooth everything on numerous occasions
-camera won't open
-alarm clock won't go off
-widgets won't update
-Apps keep closing
-e-mail doesn't arrive
-phone shutting itself off

The list goes on and on. If you're just hitting the kill button on a task killer without carefully sorting your white list then you're just going to ruin your android experience. That being said, maintaining your white list, as mentioned above, just turns into a time suck.

nitsuj17 said everything that needed to be said in the first post.

I even stopped using Autokiller on froyo, 2.2 is fooking aggressive on its own. Sometimes I wish it would chill, it's always killing stuff in the background.
