On a whole lot of the stuff you wouldn't need to know Java. Just have a computer setup that can decompile and build jar and apk files. Then learn where all the xml, apk, jar, and smali files are in the system, and what they affect. Then learn what to edit and what not to.
So yes, you will definitely need to know the Android system.
Ah well in that case it makes it much simpler lol. I can take apart just about every system and reconfigure it. I don't own a single piece of hardware that I haven't personally modified the software in some way.

Guess I'll have a look in the system structure then. Thanks for the tip.

I'm trying so hard not to flash the official OTA. I'm running Vision X N3 with Lean Kernel 3.17. It runs perfectly. I haven't had to flash a ROM in a long time because it's so smooth. I know if I flash the OTA, I'm just going to have to start over twice: once for the OTA and once for Dompop 4.4 / 5.

These are the things that keep me up at night.

You'll have to do a good bit of research to learn what controls what in the system. There are some aspects of the system that has multiple files in multiple locations. Make sure you read up on Lollipop. A lot of things have changed from previous versions of Android. Lately I've been working with the "permissions" folder and "android.policy.jar" and much has changed in them just from Kit Kat. A lot of images like the icons are in a different format too other than what was in previous versions. @kevp75 knows all about that. Lol
For those who wish to decompile and recompile apk files, check this thread out:

Guys, I have a problem I hope y'all won't mind helping me out on as I cannot find the proper thread and feel more comfortable asking you guys.

I have always had problems with my wifi connection disconnecting then immediately reconnecting, very often. It never stays disconnected for more than like second, then connects again right away to my router. My husbands phone doesn't have this problem (GS3 running CM12 Lollipop). Even when I was on KitKat this was a problem. So I did some Google searches and all the articles/questions are from '12/'13 and most of them swear it was a KitKat 4.3 issue. First question, since I am running NF9, was that the official KitKat firmware and could that be my problem? Secondly, I found another solution somebody said worked, dial *#0011# and go to 3 dots menu, wifi, turn power saving to OFF. It does seem to not disconnect but my screen won't sleep after doing this (in return I become fixated on trying to solve the new screen problem and don't pay attention to if it disconnects!) and I dont know if that even SHOULD be turned off, shouldn't it be meant to stay on? I am pretty sure the display not sleeping is from from this, but not entirely sure as when I've tested it, it had given me mixed results, sometimes it goes off when PSM (in that wifi menu) is turned on and sometimes it doesnt.. I will attatch some pictures.

I know it's kind of off topic but I trust you guys to know what you're talking about. ?

*Edit* I have that PSM thing On again and my screen is set to sleep at 15 seconds and it just doesn't. The Menu & Back keys are set to 1.5 and don't either. 2 problems now that I can't seem to fix! Research time...

I'm not too fond of messing with stuff in the testing and programming menus. But it could be a modem issue with the phone causing disconnects. A lot of times even though basebands and modems are updated, say from NB4 to NF9, there isn't an actual change with the modem. For instance, there may be no actual change in aspects of the firmware going from 4.3 to 4.4 so technically, an issue could still be present in a 4.4 firmware that was there in 4.3. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this exact problem will chime in and help you.
Have you thought about updating to the official 5.0 update to see if that fixes the issue for you? I know the actual modem has been updated for Lollipop.

Thanks for the reply. I have thought about it, but I just love my DomPop so much the way it is!! I cannot decide if I should go for it or not. Might be a good test for my wifi problems though. I don't know exactly HOW to do it, my husband does all that stuff for me usually but if you can point me to the correct instructions, I think I will give it a go. Don't I use Odin to do it? Thanks whoever can help!

I've considered The Sickness a friend for a really long time now. I used to run his roms when I had an S4. I had to ask him tonight where his thread was because it's been a long time since I first read it.

You killed me on that one ??

You should turn off Smart Network Switch in the WLAN Settings.

It was a good idea on paper but it doesn't work in real life.

I already have Smart Network switch off. Lol. I actually gave the same advice to someone a few pages back. It was even WORSE of a problem when I had it turned on,

Lol! Ikr! Sorry...

Is your mobile data turned off when you're in wifi? I never have both turned on at the same time. But, keep in mind, I am clinically OCD.

Let me get home and I'll try to get you to the links you need. You could just update your firmware to NK3 and see if it helps. Your DomPop setup will stay how it is. And yes you'll be using Odin to do it.

dude, put the phone in the freezer right away. the flashing light indicates overheating GPU. read up on the led indicators in the OP or search this thread for more info.
