Coming from darkys flashed froyo ok. Now kies connected saying it doesn't update my phone t959d. Tried new and old kies.Seems to think I have one of three (KOR) model numbers.Any tips?
And to add to this...the other day when I was doing the same thing, the only way I could get Kies to update was to completely uninstall it the download the latest version off the samsung site. Worked fine after that for some reason.

Yep. Speedmod is the only confirmed way I know to get root on stock GB although I read S1C works now but I have never tried it.

@seabas - your backed up EFS file. What does that look like? How many files in it and does it have an IMEI subject folder?

Likely need the newest version of S1C or a specific one :) in any event rooting GB is only a small step and if you have your EFS backed up and are loading and ICS ROM then you can skip it.

I got GB from kies, installed voodoo from OP with odin. Should have used speedmod.
What finally got the GB from kies to load?

Miraculously, I found an old backup of nv_data.bin burried in my old drive from when I did the SIM unlock ages ago. Rocking the correct IMEI now!

kies recognizes it as KOR too now, not XXX as before the fix, still no updating.

The only way that kies will recognize your phone after the flash to froyo is to tick repartition in odin. If you dont do that, kies will recognize the phone, but its not in the correct file system for it to upgrade it.

oh Matt - off topic - and you likely found it - but in semaphore you can also use the menu button to move down the list in CWM recovery - so you never need to use volume and power if you don't want #protips

Newbie questions

Hi,

First of all, thanks to all for the awesome threads helping me understand how to upgrade the phone. I've had a Telus T959D for about 6 months now, but have been running Stock GB. I'm ready to take the plunge and install ICS on it as I think the stock ROM is terrible.

That being said, I've taken the time to read this thread as well as the 50+ pages from the OneCosmic ICS thread (which helped spawn this one I believe) and the other couple of threads to try to ensure I have all the necessary info to do this before starting out. However, I do have a few newbie questions that I am hoping someone can help me understand.

  1. I keep reading about modem and modem versions. But I'm not sure how they relate to the phone. Is this the equivalent of roaming lists from Telus CDMA days?
  2. What is the difference between recovery mode and download mode? I think that download mode is the 3 button method (vol up/down & pwr). But how does one boot into recovery mode? Or is that the same thing?
  3. What is the best way to backup the phone (contacts, pictures, etc) before flashing anything? Is there the equivalent of making an "image" of the phone such that I can restore to my phone's exact state if I want later?
  4. Once the phone is rooted, does this also unlock the phone and give me the ability to use it on any network? Or do I need to do something additional if I want that functionality?
  5. I keep reading about running Darky's ROM to restore a stock Froyo. I'm a little confused. Is it impossible to simply restore a stock version of anything on the phone without using custom roms?
  6. I've read some posts discussing calibrating the battery. Is there a reason why this is necessary? Does reflashing/wiping destroy the phones ability to track the battery consumption/voltage and/or predict how much is left? Is there a recommended procedure for best calibrating the battery?
  7. What is meant with respect to "repartioning" in Odin? In my world repartition relates to drive space allocation. I do not understand how it relates to the cell phone.
  8. I would assume that a power-failure in the process of flashing with Odin would be disastrous. That being said, can I do this from a Parallels Windows VM from within my MacBook? Or is it safer to use a Win desktop and hope that there are no power glitches?

I appologize for the newbie-ness of these questions, but I can't seem to wrap my head around some of these things. I'm fairly sure that I'll understand better once I try flashing, but I'm trying to gather as much knowledge as possible to hopefully prevent me doing something stupid and end up bricking my phone.

Thanks for the help!

Eric

Uninstalled kies and samsung drivers and deleted from program files.Downloaded kies from Telus support page.Updated and ran.
