You can check out some YouTube videos from my friend Imraan on how to root the device. If interested, I can post a link.

Thanks much! I can do a search for them unless you have a link handy. Been reading a good bit and this is more general because currently charging for first time and not sure of ICS/firmware versions though must be ICS and not JB (not sure it's necessary, but I'm following instructions on doing a full 8 hour charge before powering up first time).
And yes, will submit a new "appropriate" post, but hoping for some initial info as may be old posts and am a bit confused. Right now would rather not void the warranty if can help it by unlocking the bootloader. Posts from 6 months ago say can root, install SuperSU, run and then backup with Voodoo OTA Root keeper, run JB update and restore root (and here again, read + & - for updating to JB but figure JB update is way to go at this point, lol). Or Sparky if running or downgraded to v10.4.2.17 (though only see the v10.4.2.17 firmware provided by ASUS and states software needs to match firmware?).
Read newer posts stating bootloader must be unlocked first (but lose ability for OTA), then root...and one post said can be issues if not done in this order (that's what I did for my EVO3D, but knew I could get it back to factory for warranty if needed to). So not sure if the old method is still supported, do I create any issues rooting first (again another post talking about temp unrooting & unlocking bootloader to do in right order!)?
So long story short, at this stage figuring I'm running newer ICS version with it being a new purchase with the old posts outdated. I'll have to bite the bullet and unlock first (figure following philos64's

Think ideal for me is rooting, installing TWRP for nandroid backups (not sure am considering custom ROMs at this point), and if necessary for some reason, unlock bootloader at a later time.
Sorry for long post, but hoping can cut down on the massive amount of reading/posts to what is valid/workable now!
