This is going to be interesting. A US/GB/Germany race (sorry Ruud - seems Russia is out).
But I think I have the edge. Should have checked my mail box today! [emoji39]
Mine is here and fitted :)

Very clear instructions - just be super careful with the right hand dock metal spacer - I didn't sit mine quite right at first and it interferred with the locking mechanism slightly. Once I got the dock on it fits perfectly now.

The dock is tight, the slop is gone and it feels far more sturdy :) One happy camper :)

Just to say Hi

Darn snail mail.... [emoji83]
Hi guys,

Sorry if I did not respond to some messages, since I am new to this kind of ' crowd comm'. :cyclops:
I did place some posts but I cannot find them, as if they were never typed by me... perhaps I did something wrong, or was too long time online before posting, so it may shut me down before I finished my post. I have no clue. But anyway.
I also can be contacted via jvwulfen, I am a g oogle member.

I am not quite a forum user (yet), but thanks for all your positive reactions on my TF701 dock fix modification.
Due to the shape of the metal plates, they are all hand crafted and I fit all parts before finishing for shipment.
My best experience was with stainless steel, and therefor takes some more time to finish.

I am happy to have solved this issue that has been around for many months now.

Thanks again for your reactions.

Hi Joepo,
I got my kit today and was very excited, watched your video again and fitting them to the correct spots was easy.
But for my tablet it made it a VERY tight fit, to the extend that I felt uncomfortable having to use that much force. I had to re-position the right side once to make the lock mechanism work (just as sbdags it seems).
Once it was locked, it does sit very tight, the wobble is gone, but unfortunately I still have the disconnect problem. Doesn't take much movement of the screen to first disconnect the dock SD and then the dock itself.
Since I have to pull/push pretty hard to detach/attach to lock the tablet, I took the metal spacers out again.
I am going to try to return the dock (once again), hoping Circuit City still takes it back AND by now has the new production line from 2014 rumored to not have that problem... :fingers-crossed:

Check out the pictures - if I did something wrong attaching the spacers, let me know.

Hi there,

I read your message and saw your pics; their positioning looks fine to me.
In some cases, after correcting the position of a part, the sticky layer may have foulded up a bit when replacing, causing a slightly thicker tooth and therefor the extra force to insert. I cannot judge that from your pics. Removing both metal spacers only makes it mechanically unstable again, plus the connector is 'out of centre' because it misses filling-thickness on the front-half.

The modification is successfull because of a match in thickness and position of the 4 parts. Modifying both the dock and tablet, cause the the electrical connector to keep its original position after the mod, necessary to make a good fit. Since the mechanical stress on the connector is gone after the mod, its position is stable when opening and closing.

What you may try to attempt, is to place the 2 metal spacers back and loosen the 2 black screws on each side of the electrical connector WITH ONLY 1 COMPLETE TURN MAX, so COUNTER CLOCKWISE, to loosen-up the connector from the dock chassis a bit. This very minimal release make the connector mechanically 'seek' when docking.

Before coming up with this mod, I measured over 15 pcs TF701 tablet openings plus dock hinge tooth, and they all matched within 0.1mm exactly. I use 2 TF701 combo's myself. I worked with models from november 2013 to may 2014, all having the same mechanical issue.
Before shipment, I try all the parts myself, and never encountered this excessive insertion force, only a real exact fit, never worrying.
I have no experience with the latest 2014 docks, where some say wobble / connection issue is solved, and some say it is not...

Could it be you used the mod parts on a 'newer' 2014 dock?
Again, I have no experience with this version.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Joep

No, mine is 11/2013 dock.
I tried loosening the connector yesterday already when I tried the to make your fix work, but that did not help either. I only repositioned the right spacer because I could not get the tablet to lock in the dock. It just didn't go down far away to trip the teeth gripping.
It was that tight fit from the very first try, btw.

So I'm assuming all the issues with this tablet are far from being fixed in the newer models?

It's the dock that has the problem, not the tablet.... Haven't read any new reports about the wobbly connection in a few months. Don't know if that is a sign that the newer models have been fixed though.

Kit coming

Canada is watching the race to see final results. Might be limping into the race after the fact if the results are favorable :p

Hi Bernd,

The insertion force is determined by the thickness of the metal plate, plus tape, and gets some placement tolerance by the soft pvc spacer in the tablet. It is this very combination of thickness and positioning of both tablet and dock parts that reduce the wobble, while keeping the electrical connector exactly centered for the intended high-speed data transfer. So there is not much room for changing thickness to reduce insertion force a little.

If you wish I can send you 2 new spacers with 0.1 less thickness, and return your metal plates to me.
If you are open for this offer, please let me know.

Regards,
Joep

I received my mod today, it was very easy to install and it is very effective! All problems gone now.

I wonder why Asus wasn't able to design this correct in the first place. But now it's a perfect tablet.

Thanks again, Joep.

Got mine today. Installing it is really 2 minutes like he says! Very thight connection now between the tablet and the dock! Finally the tablet can be used as it is meant to be!! :D

Shame on Asus they did see this during design, but I also don't get how the managed to make the tablet dock connection worse from the TF201 to the TF700 and unuseable in the TF701... The first series were great out of the box (except for Wi-Fi trouble).

Glad someone finally fixed this! Really love the way my tablet functions now! :D Thanks Joep!

Hey @JoeP, how do I find you fix on the dock fix? I'm curious about getting the tablet with your fix later. Thanks for your fix by the way!

i am not sure wether this is the right topic, but since it's about the build quality it can't be that wrong.
My mother has a tf701 since a few monts, and and after a night sleep there suddenly is a spot at the middle of the screen where colors etc. are weird. This spot is surrounded by a vague yellow line. Does anyone know what this is and wether ASUS will repair it? The digitizer doesn't seem to be affected, just the screen. I tried to shoot a picture from the problem, you can't see it that well, but i think it's clear enough: http://nl.tinypic.com/r/332m5ac/8

I would call ASUS, but since it's weekend that's no option and my mom won't stop bugging me about what it is, so i thought i'd ask here :)
