i am not sure wether this is the right topic, but since it's about the build quality it can't be that wrong.
My mother has a tf701 since a few monts, and and after a night sleep there suddenly is a spot at the middle of the screen where colors etc. are weird. This spot is surrounded by a vague yellow line. Does anyone know what this is and wether ASUS will repair it? The digitizer doesn't seem to be affected, just the screen. I tried to shoot a picture from the problem, you can't see it that well, but i think it's clear enough: http://nl.tinypic.com/r/332m5ac/8

I would call ASUS, but since it's weekend that's no option and my mom won't stop bugging me about what it is, so i thought i'd ask here :)
I had that circle once and it went away by itself after running the tablet for about an hour. No idea what caused it. Check the Q&A section. I started a thread about it.

TF701 wobble modification fix

Well the connection issues don't always show right away it seems. I went through 3 devices so far in first 2 the defects were obvious withing the first day or two. But the third unit I had it for nearly a week now and just noticed that I started to have the connection loss issues, I didn;t have any issues in the beginning.

Hi,

I read your message of your TF701 connection issue.

Since one month now I have a modification kit available that fixes both mechanical and electrical issues.

Please let me know when you are interested.
Kind regards,
Joep

Hello people, i'm considering unlocking my tf701 but i would like to test my device before voiding warranty. Is there any app for stress the display and the other parts of the device? I have noticed some weird black triangles wich last shorter than 1/2 second but it happens so casually that i'm afraid asus repair service will say "nothing wrong with it".

Sorry if my english isn't perfect folks.

I send my 11/2013 dock in to Asus for warranty repair. It's symptoms:
1) Battery would not take a charge
2) the ususal wobble, but bad disconnection issues ( total loss of connection to tablet) as soon as the screen is moved
3) whenever you connect the tablet notification pops up that a firmware update for the dock is available and the update always fails

It took two weeks to get it back and it's fixed - mostly.
The tablet now sits very snug in the dock hinge
Update issue fixed, battery fixed.
I can still make it loose the connection to the dock SD if I try. But the connection to the tablet is solid and under normal operations the disconnects are not an issue.

Here's what's in their repair report:
Model: AS TF701T M/41/US/GRY/AD02
Problem: ECN, ECR, ARN rework request
New Part: 13GOK0G10L410-10
New Part desc: TF300T FCC Tape

Now the tough decision: Do I send in my other dock which only has a slight disconnect issue but does have the wobble???

LOL!
It's great! Both charged and I can camp in the woods for a week and still have juice! He, he.

Got one for free! The one I just RMA'd. Seller told me: "Don't even bother sending it back" when I wanted to return it because of the problems. Got a full refund and ordered another one - the one I'm now contemplating to file another RMA on....:cowboy:

My experience with a TF701T

Purchased a TF701T for developpement/testing purpose and had to RMA because the keyboard would constantly push on the screen as shown in attached screenshot.

On return from RMA, the battery was misbehaving very badly (20-30% jumps/drops on plug/unplug) and lost all its juice, screen on time dropped from 4-5h to 1h30! Still the same stock ROM only unlocked/rooted as before RMA. As a bonus, the battery would no longer charge to 100% either.

On a side note, since purchase the battery dock when charging the main battery would drain twice as fast as the main battery recharges, half its capacity is thus lost/unusable (original dock capacity 3400mAh, about 1700mAh actual capacity).

ASUS response was as follows, translated from French:

After consulting the ASUS database, I found that the tablet with the serial number XXX was unlocked, so it can not be repaired under warranty.

It is with regret that I inform you that when you decided to change the original operating system, installing the application <Unlock boot loader>, you completely lost product warranty, this is to say, any repairs you plan to do (whether it concerns software or hardware) will result in a repair invoice.

Now you know, tablet is made of very cheap materials and you do loose your warranty upon unlocking the tablet, and even if they break your tablet further during RMA, you assume the consequences.

All original details (screenshots and videos) can be found here.

Sucessful Mod for the Wobble

I can confirm a successful mod to fix the "wobble" and disconnection issues. Very simple, even for an oldie like myself. I might add that a side benefit is that because the tablet is firmer in the dock, a touch on the screen is more certain. Before the mod, I noticed because the screen would move away with a finger or stylus press and I needed to hold the screen to avoid it, I find the action is more positive with the mod.
Good work Joep.

I can also confirm that the dock mod works very well, it's well worth doing.

I can confirm it too. I paid 20 euros for spacers including shipping (within the Netherlands) for the set. This is rather expensive! So price-quality ratio is not so good (the relative high price compared to what you get)

I received the set quickly. It was only because of the weekend that I had to wait four days.(this is the lack of a customer-friendly approach in Dutch mail services, which sucks more and more every year).

Installation is rather easy and straightforward with the supplied manual, although watching the youtube movie (clicik here) alone should be enough already. Since installation no more power disconnects or something like that.

The first few times the tablet and dock are connected are a bit rough, after that it's the way as it was with the older TF201.

Conclusion: the spacers are doing what they are supposed to do: a proper fix for a manufacturing flaw. However, this fix comes at a (rather high) price.

The mod fix solved the disconnectios issues at the beggining, but now, I'm getting some disconections issues. I'll try to set the stickers once again before send the tablet to RMA.

[quote name="ianwardell" post=55669589]Is the dock problem with the tablet or dock?<br />

The dock hinge is the culprit.<br/>

That's what I thought. I'm sending mine in for a repair. ... I am never sending the tablet into Asus though...they messed up my old tf201 ....when i did that.

Thanks

Why? Never been happier with a tablet.
I've never been more frustrated. I'm on my second one and after 2 weeks, it's started the dock problem. Also battery life is absolute crap on both. 8 hours including the dock battery which lasts about 1.5 hours. I also get random reboots about 3 times a day. I'm considering just getting a refund and getting a Sammy :(

Not my experience... Cannot remember having a freeze or random reboot on this tablet. But I hear you! Sounds as if you got a lemon (or two!).
Are you on the .29 firmware? The latest update? That took care of the battery drain...
In your shoes I would factory reset it, manually flash the latest firmware and if it still does it - back it goes!

One Year since I swapped my second TF701T for a Sony, I am still reading this kind of reactions from users. Even if some of You are happy, it gives me the feeling I made the correct choice, way to go Asus !!
