There is a way to run code to boot a recovery to root. I only know what is needed to do the root option.
You need an LG device with a boot loader built before June 2020. That covers a load of LG devices.
To gain the ability of rooting, you need to drain the battery beyond zero (android 0v) requires rebooting many times after device shuts down for zero volts on the battery. Once that is done, you will need to connect to a pc through usb. The boot will bypass the standard boot routine due to under voltage of the battery. You will need to write code within an image file to push to the phone. The image with code will then push your recovery to boot from sdcard. Thus you will need a recovery saved to sdcard prior.
There is a more detailed write up, in the June LG Android Security PSA from a developer.
Once an LG phone has a patched bootloader built after June 2020, this back door method to bypass bootloader security for root and other things, will not function.
I think I can search and find that info. But it is not detailed enough for most developers to make it work, without more work involved and testing.
Ok, it's been few months and development on this phone has been dead. Seems like people have given up. But I'm really desperate to get this phone rooted. I even created a thread here to setup a bounty!
At this point, I'm willing to put my phone on the line. A little bit about myself, I'm a software engineer but never worked on phones. I'll start reading about rooting and bootloaders and try to see if I could be of any help.
This really sucks. I'm on t-mobile. Is anyone else in the same situation as me?
EU here, Software dev as well that is deeply engaged with Linux (running Arch on the private Gaming rig levels). Once my phone arrives I'll give it a shot, but since I have the EU version (that can be unlocked officially now) I might not be able to help you out too well.
But I'm very set on getting Lineage to work on this thing, one way or another.
Even if you manage to unlock the bootloader (hope so cause I love lg) how do you plan on rooting since lg decided to remove all fastboot commands to flash any su binaries?
It's difficult given the RSA certs that will hard brick during cross flash attempts such as trying to flash protected partitions such as abl. I killed many v30 being a guinea pig.
I also don't understand why lg refused to release the firehouse files to use with qc mode. My guess is $$$
I don't know. But I'll risk it anyway. It's a do or die situation for me. I'm open to suggestions to try on my tmo v60 which is a guinea pig now. I have a rooted tmo v20 which I can use as a backup.
I have never done anything on my own so far and always followed the guides. So I'm open to ideas and suggestions
Correction, since the V20.I really want to get this phone and the OEM unlock doesn't surprise me with lgs but what ya wanna bet that LG still removed almost all adb/fastboot commands even after bootloader unlock.
They've been doing this since the v30 and that's when I left LG. I miss LG.
If you try fastboot boot or fastboot flash etc, it will say command not found or something unless they changed it back which I hope so cause I hate OnePlus' cameras
Highly doubt it.
