glad to see somebody still trying to help with the old fascinate. I have not had this device for a couple years.
i just recently upgraded to the gs4 but i like to troll around here :3
although to be fair, i made this guide for the benefit of all 4 or 5 people that still use their fascinates as daily drivers. or possibly the 49 people that use them as media streamer/iPod touch-like device. although for you guys i'd recommend GeeWiz Media, despite the fact it hasn't been updated in almost a year it's still a great ROM (pretty sure the dev had a kid, real life is a thing y'know)

I'm reading this thread after my Samsung Galaxy S III finally died, and I needed to activate one of my old Fascinates while I come up with a replacement... I must say, this old phone keeps on ticking!

I'm running the last cm10.1 build from July of last year, and it's pretty laggy compared to what I've grown used to :).

So what's the fastest ROM for the fascinate? I seem to recall that as android got bigger and challenged the limited storage of the fascinate, performance enhancements seemed to almost offset the added bloat...

I guess I'll play with one of the debloated stock GB ROMs to compare with this cm10.1 release.

OTOH, can someone recommend a cm10- compatible kernel that I can over-clock and try some more aggressive CPU governors?

Yes I too am taking a slow plunge into my new Moto G phone testing and trying Roms/Rernels, etc before I make a full conversion over from our longtooth fascinate!

But I too keep trolling for the ~5~ :silly: people hanging on as well

some of the recent cm10 kernels can be found here...

https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=6358
My signature has links too of ya'll are on PC platform

Devil kernel ones are really all there is,,, some are bundled with either twrp recovery or others cwm recovery
if you forgot one of its limitation,, kernel and recovery are bundled together for fascinate

my name format example is:

kernel-Devil_4.2.2_fassy_07-17
= devil kernel for 4.2.2 from the hellybean ROM on 07/17/2013

or

Kernel_ Domination_Fassy_6_10_13
= well, gonna have to look at the Domination thread to find out
in general...Features: Devil Kernel,,, Twrp 2.5
and look to the post of the version release to find out more about it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273375&page=24

Kernel_Domination_Fassy_07-23.zip
= file description:: Early beta Phil's cwm touch recovery (no touch yet) // Devil kernel

once you click on a download of a file I may also have included some more or important information in the ""File Description area""
... I may go back if I find time and link people to this thread information now that it is getting to be over a year old it would make it easier on people to find this stuff out...

Gonna try GeeWiz 4.5...

Thanks for the pointers, hhp. I just flashed the last full-wipe ODIN release of GeeWiz (v4.5) and I'll see how the performance feels. djp952 allows OC up to 1.2, and I think his use of the stock PIT with placement of most GAPPS on the PREINSTALL volume is pretty clever (it seems to leave more room on /data for my standard apps). I had flashed unjust's KitKat build on one of the two fascinates I have that I keep (without vzw service) with the home theater - the few apps I use in that case seemed to max out the storage (I believe I was using the PA gapps micro modular set).

Anyway, does kitkat actually feel snappier than jellybean on the fascinate (maybe with ART activated?), or should one really be running an even older debloated GB TouchWiz ROM like GeeWiz 2.9.2?

In any case, this old phone has certainly given me my money's worth... Now that my GS3 is dead, I'm leaning toward buying a used HTC One (m7) on Swappa. I'm not up for another upgrade on my vzw family plan for another 9 months, and I'm planning to hold onto my unlimited data plan for at least a while longer...

Best of luck with the Moto G - did I read that you got a boost mobile version? Does that include 4G LTE compatibility (unlike vzw's)?

the boost version moto g does Not have any 4G LTE, and I have been on pageplus for years anyway which does not offer 4G LTE as part of its verizon service coverage. its seems to be a very perfect and logical 'out of pocket upgrade' for me.
The full Verizon Model doesent offer it either
I'ts the only one you can freely unlock the bootloader on too. The other versions you can pay $45 and "~get" an unlock code from across the big pond
They are versions that have 4G LTE,,T-mobile/ATT though.

::: does kitkat actually feel snappier than jellybean on the fascinate:::

I would say no,,, I have run unjust's KitKat build on both Dalvik and currently still on ART...
ART definitely a bit better,,, but as social media cache builds up it still slows things down greatly,,, and needs very regular cleaning...
but battery life has been bordering on excellent considering age/rom/use/etc

the storage limitation is part of KitKat itself and "not allowing access to SD cards blah, blah, blah..."
I've recently been getting more irritated at not being able to have all the apps I used too on my fascinate too and contemplating which Jellybean to go back to,,, there were many of those that I felt had awesome performance,,, not always the best battery life though...
My personal favorites run in these ROMS
Slim, Dirty Unicorns, Hellybean, Dominmation, Paranoid 3.99 I also had a good set-up that suited my taste quite nice for Baked blackbean-V6
I really wish the cell issues in android 4.3 could have been worked out, There were some really nice ones too, feature-wise, but if cell usage is a concern it rules those out...

I too have an extra fassy with GeeWiz (v4.5) Media edition that my son has, it works great and I took even more stuff off that he wont use, at least for a few more years anyway. Performance is pretty nice, but I don't us it that often. He doesn't complain about lags very much though...
One I notice is the color of the screen with geewiz is much 'warmer' [dull] that's especially noticeable when brightness is turned at min settings.

I have wondered, now that ART has progress enough and is stable enough, how the fassy would respond if upgraded in a jellybean ROM and/or if we were ably to get/combine F2FS format [[ that's another thing that helps the Moto X and Moto G excel in performance ]]

It may be worthy of pulling some 4.4.4 art lib and compiler files and seeing if it will still boot up... ahh if I can find some time... may have to give it a go...

More on the ART subject that I really didn't think about it until after I replied yesterday,,,
with my lack of space for apps, that is all art related.
It basically pre caches virtual memory to make things load faster... Well that's hogging space to install apps...

I switched back to the dalvik this morning and I have much much more free space granted there's no cache yet for the dalvik,, but we'll see how that goes I think it runs plenty fast on dalvik

::Edit:: 08_24_2014
minor update after a week of use I can tell things feel much less responsive than when running ART
::::: It's funny how we forget how things really worked until we go back to them...
::::: ART is snappier, but trade off is very limited space for app use

Art
( yes it still calls the cache dalvik )
Roughly 2 weeks with no cache/[ART] Dalvik wipe

Alright I'm trollin here some more.
I personally think the cm11 ROM is pretty enjoyable to use, especially these days. As much as this phone was meant for GB, android has come a long long way since then and I feel it's been for the better. I'm not liking android L so far though, but of course I said the same thing about KitKat but I guess I just kinda got used to it haha
Anyway, as far as performance, it's about on par with cm10.1 (which I remember running ridiculously well on the fascinate). A bit slower, but it's newer and its an unofficial build.

My Fassy has become a fancy clock & GPS/music device

My biggest gripe with KitKat remains the removal of the Text Reflow function from WebViews. Drives me nuts every time I visit a non-mobile Web page or use an Android app that relied on the function, and I get a bit pissed with Google for this decision. Even today I still lean towards CM10.2.1 for my daily driver as a result...

Anyway, when I played with cm11 on the Fassy I was impressed that it fit and ran at all, but it didn't support my use case. I use my (no service) Fascinate mostly docked, and the cm11 build I had tried didn't support dock/USB audio output (nor did it have sufficient space for KitKat+ the apps I want on it).

Long ago I had wired my car with a Samsung Fascinate dock with USB power and the 3.5mm audio output to the car's sound system. After I switched to a GS3 with LTE service, I couldn't find a suitable car dock replacement for the new phone, so I simply turn on the GS3's WiFi AP and let the Fascinate use that for audio streaming and Google Maps+Navigation. The fassy seems to have just enough horse power to stream music and do the navigation simultaneously :). I have the phone set with mobile data turned off (I'm not paying for service anyway) and CDMA roaming to "Home only" (so that it doesn't ask every foreign network it sees for a connection). This way the GPS + listening for WiFi and mobile network IDs seems to let navigation work pretty well (even without active cell service).

Wow. Thanks for the write-up on ART vs. Dalvik space usage - nearly 3 times the space used! Not a big deal for modern devices, but the fascinate...
