Hi all,

Is it possible to just follow the steps up until the point that my phone is just Rooted, without flashing any ROM?
As in, I just want a rooted phone and keep the stock firmware that's already on the S10, without flashing a custom ROM.

I rooted quite some phones over the years, but this S10 is on another level, so I just want to make sure that I can keep all features and functions my phone currently has to offer, but including Root & Magisk.

Yes, you can root the phone with official firmware and without having a custom Rom.

--Summarized steps-- (detailed steps already given in main Post)

1) download official firmware for your model using samloader or frija.

2) patch TWRP with Magisk and add it to the AP file in your firmware.

3) go-to download mode and flash the BL, Modified AP, CSC & Home CSC.

4) reboot holding bixby+volup+power into TWRP.

5) in TWRP. Go to Wipe , format data, yes
-Then factory data reset
-Then advance wipe, check system, data, cache & dalvic cache. ( DO NOT WIPE INTERNAL STORAGE ).

6) Install Multidisabler 2.6 zip

Reboot to recovery from TWRP.

That's all. Now you have rooted stock firmware.

My rooted S10+ shows strange behaviour:

1. It does recognize unlock pattern but does not unlock upon -> solve: boot into twrp and delete the three files containing "locksetting" in data/system . You will then not be asked for the pattern and can access phone.

2. Camera stopped working: it says "warning: camera failed". Tried resetting app, resetting settings, wipe cache with no success. Other camera apps do not work. I still do not believe in hardware failure because no camera app allows switching between front/back camera. However, service menu is not able to access any camera.

3. Some apps started crashing constantly (Signal, Brave browser). Needed to reinstall these.

Of course, I haven't made firmware updates. However, there appears to be a kernel update to 4.14.113. But this took place on Nov 30 and my problems started only 3 days ago.

Do you have any clue what might be the reason? If I need to factory reset, I am tempted to go for lineage 18 as this procedure involves restoring everything.


EDIT:
This behaviour has something to do with magisk: Booting into system w/o Magisk offers complete camera functionality. Once booted into magisk, it does not work at all (see point 2 above)

EDIT2:
SOLVE: I forgot, I updated TWRP and in my case the TWRP Kernel and system didn't match. I did a

• restore of my initial backup in TWRP
• flash latest firmware and booted
• patched AP file in magisk and flashed this via Odin (follow the stets when installing Magisk)
• patched TWRP (used the IanMcd version) and flashed (follow the guide on how to flash TWRP)

Once the system booted I I restored all apps from my TB backup.

--Install Custom Rom (Beyond Rom)--
• Power off your phone
• Hold Power + Bixby + Volume Up until you see the TWRP logo
• Click Install
• Select the Beyond custom rom zip you downloaded to your phone earlier
• Follow the Aroma install options (do clean install the first time)
• When flash is complete, use reboot option and select reboot to recovery.
>>> DO NOT JUST REBOOT AFTER FLASHING - ALWAYS GO BACK IN MAIN MENU > REBOOT MENU & BOOT INTO RECOVERY - SO YOU WILL HAVE ROOT - OTHERWISE NOT! <<

Thanks a lot for sharing this, adding recovery.img in the patched image simplifies flashing steps, great tips !

I followed this guide thouroughly (as well as some other guides on XDA and TCD) and yet could never successfully pass the above step.
I had to reboot to "System" since rebooting to "Recovery" would get the device stuck at boot warning each time.

Also I could root with Magisk on the Stock ROM but not on EvolutionX...

Finally, after digging into XDA, I found out the taltest images from Lineage and EvolutionX could perform a reboot to System, no need for the keys combo hassle.

All I had to do was to flash a boot image with Magisk support
Thanks to this post and yours, I finally nailed it !

Note that I've been flashing TWRP and custom ROMS on a dozens of devices in the past ten years and yet this "verified boot" stuff has keept me awake lately.

When you say ""RECOVERY" you need to make sure this checked off" you really mean "checked" as in "on" right? Cause that's what worked for me.

TWRP installation is described in the tutorial, search for "Repeat steps 2-4", you'll find the instruction there. I missed that part too.

Now that I've rooted it and used it for a bunch of days and rebooted it multiple times - I suddenly lost root.

Not sure what caused it. I made sure I boot it with three buttons as always, but now Root Checker finds no root.

Tried flashing it again with Odin with HOME_CSC not to loose my data, and installed a multidisabler right after. Rebooted - no root.

Anybody bumped into that?

EDIT: apparently you have to have something (anything) plugged into USB while you're booting it with the three-key-combo. Learned from here:
