Personally I find the call quality much better than past xperia phones I have had by far and it is loud enough for me. Haven't had a problem hearing anyone yet. Louder than other brand phones I have had as well like the HTC inspire and Motorola atrix. The speaker is decently loud and I usually have to turn it down. The only time it isn't loud is after its been under water for the next 15-30 minutes. I love the waterproof feature. I don't think I could go back.
The flaps is personally preference but I kinda get annoyed having to undo them but at same time every phone I have had without them I get more annoyed by seeing how much dirt gets in those usb sockets etc. I live the clean design with closed flaps. I also have bluetooth installed in my car now so don't have to worry about the auxiliary socket often and only take the charger one off at night.
But to each his own.

Thanks for your insightful comments... we already know that Xperia Z has a screen you can't watch anything on, it can't display colours, you can't make phonecalls and overall it's not even a phone because it's so terrible, there's no need to open another thread to inform us all about it - again :silly:

The first thing that lured me into buying the Xperia Z is now the reason I want rid of the phone.. The flaps are driving me mad and the poor call quality in crowded places and rubbish speaker is useless, I can't hear anyone on the phone if I'm outdoors, the fact is; the One thing I needed and expected the phone to do was be able to make a call and hear the person I'm speaking too..

It's a good phone, but between the call problems, the battery over heating and those awful flaps it's a bit of a nightmare. It's only been 1 month, but thank goodness I'm only on a 12 month contract.. If this is the "best of Sony in a smartphone" then god help them.
I agree with you ! I too have noticed the stupid low volume while making a call and the overheating issue:(

No offence but, are you deaf? I get calls being in clubs, in the city etc. (daily). And I haven't had a problem hearing, coming from an s2 the sound is about the same.

But yeah the phone gets pretty warm. It's not too bad but gets anoying when after 50 minutes of watching an episode of walking dead :p The Arc S I owned used to get very warm for 2 months then it just stopped. So I think its something with the system settling in.

Try underclocking the device if you think its unbearable.

Maybe my review might help anyone on the fence about getting or selling the Xperia Z. Like most others here I also have no problems with call volume or quality. The phone is great as a phone!

I can understand some people may find the flaps annoying but it's a very small price to pay for the waterproofing and there are many ways around them, charging dock, Bluetooth headphones, etc.

Here's my review... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213151

I've had no problem with the Z, the screen is fine as long as you aren't looking at it 30-35degrees from the normal, which isn't a problem cause as a normal person I tend to look at my phone straight on, I tend to get privacy screens for my devices anyway which restrict viewing angles intentionally.

Call volume has been fantastic, it is much louder and clearer than my Xperia T and my Lumia 800.
Flaps do not bother me, I tend to use BT for audio and handsfree, and I charge on the charging dock, I've probably opened the flaps 10-15 times in the few weeks that I have had the device, and that has mainly been from curiosity, making sure the water sensors haven't been activated, once for root, once to see what the audio quality is like, once to insert my sim, and maybe 2-3 times for some dev work

To all of you worrying about the flaps wearing off
I've had my Xperia S for almost a year now. It has a flap on the hdmi port and another one on the usb port. I've been opening them at least once a day since I got it and they're as new as ever. The Z's flaps seemed to be way better and stronger when I tried it in person.

If it wasn't for the waterproofing I would now wait for my xperia z sent into service, the call quality is the best I have ever had, I think the OP is just a trolling fanboy of some other manufacturer -.-

Sv: The sacrifices of water-proofing not worth it.

While I do see your points, they're not deal-breaking for me. It's the best phone I've owned.

Phone was out with me on a mountain bike run on my local trails. Took it from pocket to check my distance traveled on a sports app I was using. And I sorta slipped and the Z fell from my hand. Straight into a muddy puddle.... Thank God for them flaps.

original poster,

is the purpose of your post like to try, & convince others of your sentiment?

i enjoy the water proofing my xperia offers z very much, & i feel that it (water proofing) is 'worth it'.

the ability to 'rinse' your handset beneath a flow of hot waters, to me, is a convenience, & 'cool'(idk what that means).

a) the flaps, for my consideration, are not an issue, & they certainly are not 'driving me mad' b) my call quality has been on par with what i expect. c) the loud speaker (i think so this is what you are refercing when you mention has been fine for me, as i usually just use it when i am @ home, or a intimate environment with not too much noise around, & have enough space to not offend any one other with any music, or personal conversation.

with that said, i am willing to suggest that a majority of us(i hope so i am correct with my suggestion) purchased the phone in part due to its appearance. i like the way this handset looks; it seems to be my preference.

i hope so that you re-consider wanting to 'rid' the phone. i could have purchased any handset on the market, & any other one which is expected to be on the market soon, & i am confirmed with my choice to purchase sony.

I haven't tried inside a club yet but so far all my calls have been clear and loud enough. I don't have the volume maxed out yet. Speaker is something even Sony lovers can't deny, they are terrible, yes. But hey, buying the new Sony NFC speakers soon when it will be rreleased in my country. =D

Your title did mention it's a "sacrifice".

So your choices are:

a water damaged phone when you drop your phone into a puddle/toilet/pond without those annoying flaps.

or

a phone with a few flaps that will survive a drop into a puddle/toilet/pond.

At any given day i would choose the latter without hesitation as it suits me. If you don't like the flaps go ahead and get another phone and have fun keeping it away from liquids.

as for the speaker, it's too freaking loud for me. ;)
