The sacrifices of water-proofing not worth it.

Spend some money on accessories and the only issue left you will have is 'overheating battery' what ever that means.

Moaning about stuff YOU can solve....

For me the flaps are fine, easy to use even with a case, makes it easy to clean, call quality is fine. I always have headphones around my neck, and plug them in if need be or have it in constantly, and almost never use the speakers anyway.

Water proofing definitely worth it.
I clean my phone with water on a regular basis. It gets dirty easily especially from the glass panels.
Hate to see how dirty the Nexus 4 gets and they have a hard time keeping it clean.

The first thing that lured me into buying the Xperia Z is now the reason I want rid of the phone.. The flaps are driving me mad and the poor call quality in crowded places and rubbish speaker is useless, I can't hear anyone on the phone if I'm outdoors, the fact is; the One thing I needed and expected the phone to do was be able to make a call and hear the person I'm speaking too..

It's a good phone, but between the call problems, the battery over heating and those awful flaps it's a bit of a nightmare. It's only been 1 month, but thank goodness I'm only on a 12 month contract.. If this is the "best of Sony in a smartphone" then god help them.
Hi, With regard the water resistant flaps these flaps are an integral part of the water resistant design. If you think about it how else could this important and significant feature be achieved? To be honest the flaps are a chore BUT it is the small price we pay for owning a water resistant mobile.

The HTC one has no such flaps and has wonderful full stereo speakers on the front that sound very nice considering its a mobile phone. The massive pay off will be if the HTC one gets wet through those large speakers say goodbye to 700.00euros. I am trying to introduce here the word compromise. What you find unacceptable others will find acceptable.

I have owned a number of other brands ranging from HTC through Nokia to the latest Samsung and apart from the Nokia's the signal strength and call quality have been poor. I live out in the country in the hottest country in Europe and the call signals are very weak here. I am highly pleased to be able to write the XZ is on a par with past Nokia in terms of receiving and maintain a call signal. This is were the water resistant feature should pay a dividend here, it reaches well over 40degrees here and where do men keep their phones? In our pockets, when we get hot we perspire and that alone has damaged no end of mobiles in this country. I jest not, simply keeping a phone in ones pocket can truly lead to water ingress! Still doing battle with Samsung over their Nexus S that they claim has water damage! I was told a mobile cannot be kept in trousers pockets! Don't set me of on this.....Bloomin crazy country.

The speaker on the XZ is pathetic in terms of listening to ones music HOWEVER I don't purchase a mobile phone to use as a stand alone music centre? Purchase some Sennheiser head phones and the stereo reproduction is amazing and I write that with well over 40 years of top end Hi-Fi experience. Though the quality produced by the XZ speaker is truly awful it does perform its tasks well and the volume levels are as good as most other, but not all, available mobiles.

Overheating? I have read about this and though I have not yet experienced this I can understand it, THiNK! Where is any heat to escape from in a water resistant mobile? The XZ is a marvel in design and specification. Its built like a brick, feels and looks like a quality mobile unlike my Samsung GS3 and Note which look like they came from a street vendor even though they are both superb mobile devices.

I am sorry you have not found the XZ to your liking. Its a bad feeling when that happens. I would ask you though to consider the plus factors with XZ ownership and they vastly outweigh some of the phones less positive factors. No phone built yet is perfect, we have to accept some compromise so its all about what you are prepared to sacrifice, its a personal opinion.

I have yet to find the perfect mobile and doubt there will be one. Design alone being highly subjective.

Kindest regards.

I find the earpiece volume and clarity to be absolutely fine and can hear people even in the most loud of situations including roadworks outside where I work. Stop dunking it and try another providers SIM card as some are quieter than others.
Also edit the sound settings under phone and you can make it even clearer.
Bluetooth is the way to go-to avoid the flaps although I have no issues with them
I came from a Xperia TX which has a great loudspeaker and I would say the Z is almost the same. I have not experienced loudspeaker issues or low call volumes like some of the other posters.

To be very honest I come from all android in shapes n forms I have come from X10 to S2 to Note 1 to Note 2 and one x to XZ to be honest no other phone I have loved so much wiht the design no matter what time of the day I see the phone on desk its looks absoultely beautiful.

I agree there are few cons for the Phone there are works arounds too

Low call volume / Headset / speaker volume? ---> try the zeroinfinity mod its just AWSOME you will double the volume.

Bad display angles ? use the screen calibrator set the hue / saturation to 12 / 220 and the brigtness to about 60% the colors dont washout anymore

Bad Wifi? -- software will be fixed so not a hw fault..

Battery drain ? -- us 2X battery saver ... not Stamina mode as it just breaks the real android need by turning off data, 2x battery gives much better battery to be honest I travel by MRT to and Fro office so I use the phone for about 90 Mins ofvideo and 1 hour of music and 1 hour of web browsing in a day so about 3 hours of screen and cpu i get the phone around 20% at the end of the day which is descent ..

The flaps neednt be removed if yo have a doc , I am sure spending 800$ for a phone you wouldnt moan to buy a 25$ dock to charge , use bluetooth headset and you wll never need to open ur flaps... keeping it water resistant all the time.

over heating ? nope people are wrongly giving this message the phone gets hot max to around 45degrees yes it makes you feel hot coz the cpu area is close to the glass and the heat gets out that way take the note 2 or a htc install the temp monitoring app it will show u the same temperature just that phone has lesser ventilation due to water resistance the heat is transfered out,

Over all I am very happy with the phone with a small concern for battery... except that you wil not regret investing in the phone..

If your talking CPU temp, mine hits 65-68°c on a regular basis both with and without undervolt lol when charging/browsing/taking pics.

45 battery temp though is nothing extraordinary its just the design which you've explained so people need to calm down a little bit.

65°c and above??!? Something not correct with your phone.

My phone never reach over 50°c.

wow u really hate that device! my xz is working really good.
if the flaps are driving u crazy, buy an docking station, then u just have to open them if u want to flash another rom (u should do that then u would find out how amazing this device is) ,and its not the battery thats overheating its the cpu and just some app's will cause this problem! i also dont know why u think the sound quality is rubbish? mine is, i would say NORMAL. so if u want to get rid of it sell it and use a no brain no pain phone!
sorry my english is not the best anymore
regards arno

Is not only waterproof. It's also dustproof. And those two makes it absolutely worth it. I destroyed my share of Androids at my 'dusty' work environment and for now the Z is holding up perfectly. After a whole week of dust eating in my overalls, he takes a bathe with me :D and comes out, as out of the box he came with....Xperia Z is the best Android for me......

My XZ is water damaged haha all the years I've had a phone and never have I dropped one in water. I unplug my ps3 controller and it dropped off my knee into a bowl of water :( still seems to work ok so although the sensor next to the charger port is red it might have just made it lol

You're giving people the wrong impression. It's water and dust resistant, not proof! Huge difference between the two...
